I'm just in the process of setting up a site with node comments, vhich
for a whole host of reasons wants a lot of the 'discussion' content to
be first class nodes available throughout the site, with cck fields and
taxonomy etc.

It's pretty intensive on the server, and it's a hack that requires you
to do various other things with views, themes and menus. So I'd avoid
unless you really have to.
