I am worse than useless. These are things I haven't been able to form into
complete sentences but hope can be touched on in the proposal.
- uniqueness of open, securely anonymous access in an active news and
community site context, now to have all the features of a modern publishing,
content management, and community site.
[anyone have any ideas for attachments-- workflow sketches of the
technology, historical overview of Indymedia, anything like that?]
notes:
The Indymedia movement set out to save journalism before newspapers
acknowledged it needed saving.
Indymedia threw itself completely open when most newspapers that had web
sites were afraid to accept reader comments.
in some cities, such as Boston, spam and trolling that exploits the
limitations of legacy IMC software has severely hurt the community
Indymedia Boston, from a role of catch-up, and Indymedia Belgium, from a
role of leadership, can form a model for Indymedia worldwide
preserve the unique elements of Indymedia - openness, anonymity
quote PBS idealab article on attacks on protesters and press, need for
coverage form regular people's and activists perspectives
use of and outlets for anonymous posting
the most open and accessible media platform with a commitment to resisting
censorship
long tradition of otherpress feeds, acting as a central aggregator without
but this proposal isn't just about helping Indymedia continue to fulfill its
unique role going into a second decade
this is about getting even more local with journalism initiatives
Indymedia offers the lowest barrier to participation of any news source of
significant profile, a quality that becomes both more important and more
powerful at a local level. IMCs have a commitment to openness often lacking
in local sites (placeblogs).
Therefore, developing technologies built on Drupal Organic Groups and feed
handling to allow local subsites and richer sharing of content among sister
sites will introduce an important player on the scene of local media
(Indymedia centers especially, but also other groups using the software
developed for this proposal).
and above all to help even more local content be created and find its
audience and bubble up to the current regional IMCs similarly to how
regional IMCs bubble up to indymedia.org, but with even more contributor
involvement
allowing communities, not appointed editors, to encourage good content
geotagging
