I'm not sure if I agree with that. It seems that the Drupal Initiative focuses on specific tools and modules. The News Challenges focuses on a media-related project. But maybe I don't know enough about the Drupal Initiative.

I guess we should emphasize, as Mark mentioned, that it will be released under GPL? By the way, check this out:

Knight News Challenge is different than the Drupal Initiative.

We have a far far better shot at getting funding from the Drupal
Initiative, but

a) the News Challenge is worth a long shot, and

b) the materials we produce for the News Challenge will be perfect to
use to apply to the Drupal Initiative
