I'd like to offer a session "Secrets of Making the News" - a practical
intro to news reporting, including some common tricks, mistakes and
misconceptions.

Really aimed at those starting off with written reports and news
releases, but could also be a refresher or a different perspective for
others. Topics might include things like the 6Ws and the pyramids, but
I'll try to go where wanted, if I can think how to get there. Those
taking part should bring a vague idea of something they want to
announce or report, fictional if needed.

How long are the sessions and what facilities are at the hut?

I'll run this session if four people say they're interested. It
involves bringing books, leaflets, notes and stuff (as this can go in
unpredictable directions), so I need to know before I set off. Why
four others? I think that five is the minimum required to get lots of
ideas sparking.

I can't remember how much I've introduced myself, so here's seven
points:
- Currently edit both commercial and gratis newsletters, print and
email;
- Published in newsstand computing magazines;
- Edited a student publication for a few years, which won an
NUS/Independent award;
- Worked in community and commercial radio;
- Trained on writing press releases, getting media coverage and
producing marketing material (most recently last year);
- Worked as a part-time tutor at various post-16 levels, leaving after
disagreeing about how to calculate league table statistics.
