JNF BOOKS OF HONOR AT THE JEWISH GENEALOGY CONFERENCE
--------------------------------------------------------------------

Jewish National Fund's Books of Honor are of paramount interest to the
participants of the 24th Conference on Jewish Genealogy, currently
taking place in Jerusalem. As interest in discovering one's roots
grows among Jewish people (and non-Jews) JNF's huge database,
originally created to commemorate individuals, has become an
increasingly important source for tracing genealogy. JNF's
computerized database, which is open to the public, is one of the
largest sources of names to be found among Jewish organizations.
One of the people who came to the JNF booth at the Genealogy
Conference was a woman from Yugoslavia, who was going through
computerized data on display at the conference. She was very excited
to discover an inscription in JNF's Children's Book with the name of
her brother, who was murdered in the Holocaust. The inscription was in
honor of her brother's brit mila - circumcision ceremony. Although it
could not be determined who had inscribed him, the woman was greatly
moved and asked for a copy of the original registration certificate as
a remembrance.

By means of JNF's Golden Books - the first volume of which was written
between 1901 and 1912 -  and by means of the database built on these
books, those interested have an important research tool. On display at
the booth is a blue box, found in the ruins of the Warsaw Ghetto. This
chilling exhibit expresses the bond JNF has created between World
Jewry and the Land of Israel.

Ms. Sarina Roffe, Director of Communication at JNF, lectured during
the genealogy conference on JNF's Books of Honor. She shared with the
participants the many opportunities for the general public and for
researchers to use JNF's huge database in the field of genealogy. As a
result of the lecture, conference participants flooded the JNF display
and all received a patient response to all their inquires.

Thousands of inscriptions are added to JNF's Books of Honor annually
from people all over the world who contribute to JNF projects to honor
their loved ones by an eternal inscription in these impressive
volumes. The Seven Honor Books of JNF, the Golden Book, the Children's
Book, the Bar/Bat Mitzvah Book, the Marriage Book, the Book of
Plantings, the Book of Special Gifts and the Aliyah Book together
constitute an expression of the tie between the Jewish Diaspora and
the land of Israel. These volumes reinforce the bond of the Jewish
people with the country and make the donors into partners in the work
of JNF.
