Hola hola, Hey Folks,
Timo here from Indy Chiapas. Been a long time since I
have been active on this list, for years I've been
following the traffic. Anyway, sorry for the silence
and here goes a proposal on behalf of Indy Guatemala.
Yes, officially on the indymedia list, indymedia
guatemala does not exist. Yet in reality, there has
been an active collective in Guatemala working as
indymedia on and off for the last five years, using a
category on the indymedia chiapas page:
http://guatemala.mediosindependientes.org
This group over the last eight months has been greatly
strengthened by several small groups meeting regularly
and re-organizing from several distinct departments in
Guatemala. This is a process that from Indy Chiapas
we have accompanied quite closely (as well as other
similar processes in the MesoAmerican region).
For the last two months the indy guate collective has
begun organizing around the World Social Forum of the
Americas (FSA), to be held Oct 7-12 in Guatemala City.
The are by far and away the most organized of all of
the groups working on distinct issues in Guate around
the FSA. They are in direct negotiations with the
event organizers and have made a fair amount of
headway securing spaces in the San Carlos University
to host the IndyMedia space.
The vision is to promote an active space prior to and
during the FSA that permits community, Mayan,
independent and autonomous media makers to work,
covering the events of the FSA as well as drawing much
needed attention to the increasingly repressive and
violent reality in which Guatemalan's are currently
living.
I am attaching (in Spanish) the proposal that group
defined as necessary for providing an Indymedia space
for the FSA that may house up to or more than 400
independent media makers.
Of the total budget that Indymedia Guatemala is
searching for they are requesting $1500.00 US from the
indy network as a means to provide the space and
training required. Those funds will be used for:
Paper and ink for the Printing press (one of the
participating collectives has a press and will donate
the use of the printer)
Internet (The university at present is not
guaranteeing internet access to the FSA)
Consumables: minidiscs, minidv, cassettes, dvd's,
batteries
Materials for Credentials
Coffee, from local organized cooperatives.
The importance of this indymedia space is such that
there is an excellent opportunity not only to provide
alternative coverage of this event but rather to
inject the debate about independent, alternative,
community, and indigenous media into a much needed
National spotlight and debate in Guatemala.
Thanks for you time in considering this proposal.
Mil gracias por considerar esta propuesta y saludos a
todas!!!
