Århus Denmark
Our featured city or "kommune" for September is Århus, Denmark.
Århus is one of the oldest cities in Denmark. Founded during the Viking Era as a trade center, the city was in an ideal location; with good fishing, easy to protect, with an excellent river access to the sea.
The early name for the settlement was Aros, which translates as the "mouth of the river", the name evolved to Arehuse and then to its current designation of Århus which can also be spelled as Aarhus.
Today Arhus is a bustling port city of almost 300,000 located on the east coast of Jutland. Accessible by ferry, train, airplane, or automobile, Arhus is less than a three hour drive from Denmark's capitol, Copenhagen.
Arhus has a wide range of cultural and sports activities.

Asleep For 2,000 Years
Peat digging in Denmark, is a labor intensive occupation that has its interesting side as well. The peat diggers never know what they will find in the nation's peat bogs.
So, when the diggers at Nebelgård Mose, a small peat bog by the village of Grauballe in Jutland, came across the remains of a dark brown body, when on an overcast and rainy day in 1952, they were not surprised about their find.
However, what they did not realize was the this body, later called the Gauballe Man, was over 2,000 years old. He was so well preserved that museum curators were able to display his facial features, hair, nails, and even the structure of his skin.
But, how did he die, how did Graubelle Man end up in this out of the way peat bog?
During the time of the Iron Age, the peat bogs were places where people would gather to worship sprits and make sacrifices sometimes as thanks for military victories and sometimes for help in a recovery from illness. Graubelle Man appears to have suffered one of these brutal deaths. His throat was cut, his left leg broken and he was thrown into a hole in the bog, where he remained for over two thousand years.
If you would like to learn more about the Graubelle Man, visit the Moesgaard Museum in Århus, or read some of the articles in Archaeology Magazine.
