SUMMARY
- -------
I have a concern about the default copyright on dada sites, and I
propose that we change it to non-comerical use only, as follows. This
has been the default copyright(left) for imc sites since the beginning,
which sf-active and mir currently provide:
"All content is free for reprint and rebroadcast, on the net and
elsewhere, for non-commercial use, unless otherwise noted by author."
DETAILS
- -------
It appears that the default copyright for content published on dada is
the following:
"Public Domain; no rights reserved."
My concern is that a large number of people, perhaps even a majority,
end up publishing their content in the Public Domain on dada sites. And
my speculation is that most do this either because they ignore the
copyright selection on the publishing form (perhaps because they have
come to expect a default non-commerical license for imc content), or
they are not familiar with the full implications of putting their
content in the Public Domain (and may conflate it with the
non-commerical license).
Specifically, that the spirit and purpose of the imc was to create
content in constructive opposition to corporate media, free to use
except for commercial use, and that Public Domain does not allow for
this restriction.
For example, if a corp media outlet wanted to use a photo or video from
the newswire, they had to negotiate this with the author (which has
happened in the past, regardless of the different perspectives on this),
rather than profiting freely from imc work.
So, for the dada publishing interface, my proposal is for the 'Creative
Commons' radio button to be selected as default, with 'Non-commercial'
and 'Share-alike' checked.
I guess a dada patch could be released that changes the default license
on existing sites?
Thanks,
Patrick
