just a thought:

any ideas about recycled batteries - from transport industry, for
instance, where i used to see loads of these standing about with less
capacity left in them than needed to kick off a 10 liter / 500Hp truck
engine, but with sufficient power to run a flaptop (or as was also
sometimes the case, used in forklifts or in vans etc etc) - ?

a more messy method, perhaps - and the may be dirty and more heavy than
otherwise, but won't cost the earth in the same way
