Hi there

I was in the content focus group but unfortunately had to leave the conference shortly afterwards. I would like to volunteer to co-ordinate the links and background info for the 'history of protest/alternative media' topic and to help with feature writing during and post the event.

Thanks
Justin

Subject: [Imc-g8-2005] Content and Features issues, needs, to do list

CONTENT discussion
Saturday 14th May

There will be lots of information posted about
protests and actions on Indymedia over the G8 period.
Content is important because
1) there needs to be background information which
explains WHY people are protesting. This is to raise
awareness among the thousands who visit indymedia
including mainstream journalists.
2) There needs to be diverse and balanced coverage

1) Background information will appear on the Indymedia
G8 page. For each of a number of topics we'll have a
summary paragraph and links to other websites.
We agreed on the following topics. Each one relates to
various actions and we already have some relevant
links:

*Climate Change - day of climate action -
risingtide.org; trapese.org; platform.org

*Immigration - Make Borders History - noborders.org

*Trade, Debt and Aid - Make Poverty History  -
oxfam.org

*Community/Employment  - Cre8 Summit, precarity

*Anti-militarism - Faslane Action - CND.org

*History of G8 and corporations - trapese.org,
corporatewatch

*History of protest and alternative media - Rebel
Clown Army, People's Golfing Association

For each topic we need someone to collate all of the
information and write a summary paragraph with a bit
about what the links contain, and we need people to
send that topic co-ordinator links on that topic.

We already have people to co-ordinate the following
topics:
Climate Change - doopa at aktivix.org
Trade, Debt, Aid - Catrionaf at care2.com
History of G8 - rolandplayle at yahoo.com

ACTION Call out for topic co-ordinators for the
remaining topics
ACTION Call out for links to be sent to topic
co-ordinators, with a sentence describing what the
link contains
ACTION Send the info to the G8 list to be posted on G8
page

2) Diverse coverage
To ensure diverse coverage we need to work with the
dispatch people to
*Create an up-to-date list of actions and events which
need reporting, e.g. counter-conferences
*Put this list on the'how to get involved' (resource) section on
the website
*Put this list in the IM centres
*Call out for reporting on actions which aren't being
covered
*Ask people to make less heard voices heard and for
variety in audio, e.g. interviewing members of
audience in counter-conferences

FEATURES discussion
Saturday 15th May session 2

The features discussion was held by at least one person from each of
the audio,video and content group.

The key issues are:

We need to encourage more people to collate news items and write
features

This is an ideal task for people who aren't in Scotland but want to
get involved and should be posted on a 'how to get involved' section
of the site

We need to write a short (eye-catching!) technical guide to writing
features to put on the website and distribute

We can also do a call out for feature writers (and do some training
beforehand in local areas)

This could also encourage people to make sure that a diversity of
voices are heard. For instance selecting interviews with less heard
voices such as asylum seekers or members of the local community
instead of activists, or audience members at counter-conferences
instead of the presenters.

In order for feature writers to locate these 'minority voices' and
give them a better chance of being heard there needs to be good
keywords (or a full description on all audio and video clips for
searching)

Translation of features should tie in with translation of other items

----------------------

Sorry I couldn't stay on Sunday. Theres lots of needs identified in
the above and we need to co-ordinate with the other groups to share
similar tasks.
