Hi,

Hello Biggs,

I'm Kenneth, one tech formely sort-of IMC-Barcelona tech that made
some work for the Scottland's G8-Summit.

Then, we made a mail2newswire gateway for MIR and dada-IMC.

Nowadays it's sort of abandoned software, but Ben, from IMC-Uk is
pushing me to help him set-it-up as a stable gateway for UK.

Right now, IMC-Philly is using it.

    And what's that software?

Basically is a mail to newswire gateway designed for removing as
much spam as possible: prepared for the multimedia messages of camera &
smart phones.

This tool was tested during G8-Summit and the BioCon, and, IMHO, it
would be great for you as well, as it opens the chance to publish media
& text from the front line!

It's very helpful to report anything while you don't have a computer
& internet, so it was great with pics & videos from blockades and beacons :D

So, if you're interested in running it as well, this is what we require:

    - A testing site to ensure it will publish as you want
    - A contact person ;)

    And two install flavours:

    - In one of my servers, probably contralaguerra.org (uptime 462 days
:D )
    - In one of your servers
    - Maybe (I'm not the one to tell it) at the new IMC-Uk's stable
mail2mir gateway (an Indymedia server)

Then, what we do IOT avoid spam?

    - We require specific tokens in a message (@@title @@brief .....),
so NEVER ANY SPAM was coded for it, we're still alive.
    - MIR implements great IP/rate blocking features, so you can control
if it's being abused as you actually do with other users.
    - The system can be splitted in one email alias (forward) pointing
to the "TRUE" publisher's email, so, you can control when do you
enable/disable it by setting your own alias.

Advantages compared to other message gateways:

    - Some phone companies offer better rates for internet connection
than multimedia messages.
    - Most companies impose video restrictions (time & format) to
multimedia messages (usually only 17 seconds), so emailing avoids it.
    - Most MMS gateways support sending MMS to emails as well, so you
can send emails or MMS messages
    - It opens a broad branch of innovative publishing systems: Ben at
Rampart made an Offline Indymedia site that allowed people to post
content IN A BIKE WITH 3 PCs!!!!! this system sent mails to it's local
mail server and once connected to the internet takes advantage of
mail2mir to commit the posts. Really funny!

So, please, think on it. This generated a big debate about Spam issues
at IMC-Uk, but after 2 years running it, now they want it to be
"official". Philly asked for setting it up and never took it away. They
published the mail gateway in their site and nowadays mail2mir is
filtering 100% SPAM to it. Let's take advantage of sharing software
across sites :D

Cheers,

Kenneth
