Saudi Arabia Executes Suspects by Crucifixion in Literal Application of Koranic Injunctions

MIRSAD Calls for A Full International Inquiry of this Terrible Violation of Human Rights
----------------------------------------

Two Saudi newspapers, Ashark Al Awsat and Arab News, reported yesterday the
execution by crucifixion of a number of Saudis suspected of crimes. There
was no suggestion in the news report of any trial. On the contrary, a
statement by the Crown Prince, Abdallah Ben Abdel Aziz indicated that his
government carried out the execution in implementation of literal Koranic
injunctions.

Saudi officials described the suspects as extremists guilty of killing
security men and officials, including a Sharia judge, in Al-Jouf region,
misusing religion and describing Muslims as infidels to justify their crimes.

Their names are Hisham ibn Awwad Minzil Al-Awdha, Mohammed ibn Awadh ibn
Rija Al-Belhood and Amjad ibn Abdul Aziz ibn Khamis Al-Jaber.

Sheikh Abdul Aziz Al-Maiman, a religious scholar, told Arab News that such
crimes are called acts of corruption in Islam, and that the Qur'an has
warned people against indulging in such acts. "In Islam, those who are
found committing such acts of corruption as killing, stealing and
kidnapping are punished severely and therefore are executed or crucified,"
Sheikh Al-Maiman added.

MIRSAD calls for a full international inquiry, to be ordered by the UN
Security Council, of this terrible and barbaric violation of human rights
in Saudi Arabia, a country which already has a very bad record of human
rights violations, and for making the violators accountable before
international criminal courts. It is highly ironic for the international
community to advocate democratic modernization of the Middle East when one
of the most influential governments of the region openly undertakes an
adverse march into pre-historic ages.
