Subject: Draft Press Release for Deserter

Sorry I have been lagging on this. Things I'm not sure about:
-We havent totally confirmed the Ryan Johnson video chat, do y'all think
we should meintion this, say "he will address the audience" and we can at
least read a statement, or cut it from the release.

-Brandon's quote is a little awkward, but I think it helps with the press
release, and he has no problem if we tweak it. Can anyone think of any
changes to it that would be good?

-Are there any other additions or subtractions that would be good?

I'm sorry this took me a while, hopefully we can edit this and get it out
quick.

On Friday Novemeber 14th, in observance of Veterans Day, The Houston
Independent Media Center and the New Houston Chapter (#49) of Iraq
Veterans Against the War will be cosponsoring a screening of the
documentary film 'DESERTER' At Rice Cinema. This event is also
co-sponsored by Veterans for Peace and Rice for Peace.

Deserter' is the journey a deserting soldier and his young wife as they
flee across the country to seek refugee status over the Canadian border.
As they move from safe house to safe house, we get to know Ryan and Jen -
two, shy, small-town kids from the Central Valley who joined the military
because there were no jobs, and find they must make a heroic stand in
order to escape an illegal and immoral war. 'Deserter' is a political road
movie with one of the few happy endings that this war has given us.

We will have a video chat with Ryan Johnson, who is currently in Canada
seeking asylum, and presentations and discussion facilitated by Iraq
Veterans Against the War. The president of the local chapter #49 of Iraq
Veterans Against the war says “As someone who took part in the invasion of
Iraq and then went on to resist recall to deploy for a second tour due to
my conscience, I believe its important that the American public listen to
the veterans who have taken part in this war and to help us end this war
before another 4,000 service members have to lose there lives.”
