  NEW HAVEN: The failure of the U.S. health care system will be discussed in a public forum titled: "Health Care: Basic Human Right or a Privilege?" with keynote speakers Dr. Stephanie Woolhandler, Harvard associate professor of medicine and cofounder of Physicians for a National Health Program, and UNITE HERE Hospitality Industry President John Wilhelm. The program will be moderated by Between The Lines and WPKN Radio producers: Scott Harris, Denise Manzari and Melinda Tuhus. 

A community panel, including Connecticut House Majority Leader Christopher Donovan, will engage the keynote speakers in substantive discussion.

The forum on universal health care will be held from 2-:00 to 4:00  p.m.  Saturday, Oct. 13, at the United Church on the Green,   270 Temple St., New Haven , CT . 
A reception honoring the work of Dr. Woolhandler and Mr. Wilhelm will take place directly after the forum from 4:00 to 5:00 p.m. at the United Church on the Green's reception hall. 

In advance of the 2008 presidential election, a new national debate on reforming U.S. health care has been triggered by the harmful failures of a privatized system plagued by these fundamental flaws:

 *Forty-seven million Americans are without health insurance; over 360,000 in   Connecticut.
 
*Lack of health insurance causes roughly 18,000 unnecessary deaths every year in the United  States .
 
*Although the U.S. leads the world in spending on health care, it is the only industrialized nation without universal coverage.

*The    World Health  Organization ranks the United States health system #37, after all European nations,   Canada  and   Japan.
 
*Inability to pay medical bills is the leading cause of personal bankruptcy in the U.S. , according to a   Harvard University  study.

The suggested contribution for the forum is $10. Advance tickets for the reception are $35 per person where appetizers, wine and beer will be served.
