Houston Indymedia has 2 important events this week, one is an exciting
film and one is a important burden.
Houston Indymedia has produced a weekly show on KPFT 90.1fm since 2002. If
you have been listening to KPFT this week you are probably aware that we
are in pledge drive and during the excruciating but important work of
paying our bills without taking ads or sponsorship from big companies. Our
program tonight at 7:30pm will feature commentary on the siege of gaza and
a excerpt of an interview with Boko Freeman, an activists with People's
Party 2 and the Houston Chapter of the Black Panther Party about the work
they did in Houston in the 1970's.
Houston IMC radio has been covering a number of important stories of late,
including covering the solidarity protests with Gaza and local
expieriences of Palestinian-Americans

Our collective is composed entirely of volunteers, and we are lucky to
have this chance to tell these stories to a wide audience though the
airwaves at KPFT. However KPFT is an expensive project, and we are doing
our part to try and raise the funds to keep the lights on and transmitter
transmitting. If you can afford to make a donation this evening to our
show by calling 713-526-5738 or by going to http://kpft.org and pledging
online, you would be doing us a huge favor!
Also, you are invited to attend this film screening we are hosting this
Wednesday February 4th 7pm At Rice Cinema (Map:

Gaza Ghetto: A Family Portrait 1948 - 1984
Arabic, Hebrew and English, with English subtitles
1985, USA/Palestine, by Joan Mandell, PeA Holmquist and Pierre Bjorklund,
New Day Films
With Shorts from Al Jazeera TV
Much of the mainstream discourse about the current conflict in Gaza
portrays it as an eternal struggle between two groups fighting since
biblical times. 'Gaza Ghetto' dispels this myth, examining the impact of
displacement on the life of Abu el-Adel and his family through intimate
scenes of daily life in Jabalia, the largest Palestinian refugee camp. The
film follows them as they return to the site of their former village, now
the site of a Jewish settlement inside Israel. As the grandfather and
great-grandfather point out an orchard and sycamore fig that used to
belong to their family, a Jewish resident emerges and orders them to
leave, claiming they need a permit to be at the site. After spending this
time with Abu el-Adel and his grandchildren you will understand how the
roots of the Palestine-Israel conflict influence today's harsh realities
and dreams of peace, justice and stability. 'Gaza Ghetto' is the first
documentary film made in Gaza, and sadly all of the themes still seem as
excruciatingly relevant 20 years later.
After the film, we will be joined by local Palestinian activists for a
discussion about the ongoing crisis. This event is cosponsored by the
Houston Palestine Film Festival (http://hpff.org) and the Houston
Coalition for Justice and Peace in Palestine (http://hcjpp.org).
Rice Cinema is located at Rice University, Entrance #8 (University &
Stockton). We will be asking for donations at the door, however, no one
will be turned away for lack of funds.

And mark your calendars for February 25th, we will be screening Pirate
Radio USA (http://www.pirateradiousa.com/) as a benefit for KPFT.
