<a small re-intro.. a brief history.. and a call-out...>

Hello, Kamusta, Apa kabar, Mingala ba, Namaskaar, Kem cho, Li ho, Ho bo,
Yiem longx, Annyong, Konnichi wa!

i'm wowi, originally from Perth Indymedia and now with Sydney Indymedia,
both part of the Oceania network.
I also do work on newimc and www-features.. (often focusing on the
Asia-Pacific region)

I've been steadily involved with the Oceania Network since being
inspired by the energy of people I met at the Oceania Conference mid
last year.
Of the people I met, was Alex of Imc-QC, Philippines, who had been
brought to the regional conference suggested that perhaps Asian Imc's
should create Asia-Pacific regional solidarity. Alex sent an invitation
to Imc-Japan to initiate [1]

At the time it was felt that existing Asian Imc's needed support to
survive before anything could form, and for more Imc's to come about in
the region.

So, as a result the Asia-Pacific Solidarity Project [2] was started.
Based in Oceania, the project was primarily to help upcoming
Asia-Pacific Imc's (ie. Imc-Burma; now official, Imc-Jakarta; in the
final stages of newimc, Imc-Thailand and Imc-Korea; in the early stages
of newimc).. and also to help sustain existing Imc's. Oceania began to
offer some monetary support, geek/skill support, and equipment to the
neighbouring region.

After talking to a number of Asia-Pacific Indymedia Activists I realised
that one way support from Oceania, was important, but not what was
needed, and not what Alex was suggesting. Asia-Pacific Imc's needed
solidarity, from _each other_ as well as Oceania, but more importantly
_autonomy_, by sharing with people from who were encountering similar
hardships solidarity could begin, and similar ideas could be brought
together, as well as skills shared; all empowering acts that could lead
to autonomous creating for the region..

At the first Imc-Asia-Pacific meeting [3] there was an overwhelming
amount of productivity!
It was fantastic to see the many Asia-Pacific Indymedia activists that
I'd spoken to working together in one space with Oceania Indymedia
activsits, and the potential for this to continue, with strong
solidarity growing between indymedia activists and collectives.

A decision was made at the first meeting, to start the Imc-Asia-Pacific
list [5], for Communication, Collaboration and Solidarity.
Similar to Imc-Communication it could function as a message area, but
like Imc-Oceania it could be a working group that brings together people
who want to see the Indymedia project a sustained success across the
Asia-Pacific region; so that Asian activists and people could have an
independent voice.

For Indymedia's such as Imc-Burma the project remains experimental (and
risky), and continues to require alot of outside support from Indymedia
activists in other regions. An advantageous possibility afforded by the
decentralised nature of our network! ;-)

It still remains vitally important to remember;
that whilst Asia-Pacific Indymedia activists build their projects,
Indymedia activists from Oceania and the wider network community can
reinvigorate and support their projects by offering solidarity in all
forms: new skills, better security, site hosting, financial aid,
hardware/equipment, _translations_, and ideas.
