[cjm] Back in early Indymedia days some of the lists were moved to be
viewable by members only in order to stop google caching them (so full
names didn't turn up in Google searches) and to stop spam.
AFAICR it was also decided that anyone cold sign up so the arcives were
still accessible (unfortunately the ft year or two are now missing from
the archives). I'm not sure how the lit moderation works in regard to
this though I assume this is only relevant for posting, not lurking.
Basically, assume Chekov is correct - mail is not private or secure
unless you take technical steps to make it so.
If spam becomes an issue each working list could make a decision
regarding its own use.
