Genelle and all, Re: my post on "only" the Editorial Collective editing, deleting, hiding. I
edited this post a number of times. I knew that it was impossible for only the editorial
collective to edit, etc., and I was going to clarify my post but decided against it.
I guess I SHOULD have clarified it. Obviously there are not enough people in the
Editorial Collective to do their job because of the password problem. And Genelle, I have
asked you to edit my posts because of html errors or photo errors (posts to be hidden) etc.
And I feel that you and anyone else with a password should "still" be allowed to edit posts
for that purpose. I just didn't take the time to add all the exceptions.
I should have said that editing "content" because of hurt feelings should be discussed with
the editorial collective. I realize that Jeffrey is pissed off because of what has happened.
But I still feel that he made a poor decision without first discussing this with the volunteer
collectives. And Jeffrey, I'm guessing that it was a quick decision.
Personal responsibility and personal accountability, Jeffrey, I think you made a mistake--
making an important decision without consulting with anyone. However, I did say in my
note that it is over and done with. Steve Hampton initially caused this friction. And we
should now work to find the good in all of this. I understand why you reacted the way
you did BUT censorship without discussion is not the way to go unless it was a post
promoting illegal activity which could be detrimental to the imc site.

I wrote: for now it should be up to each individual password holder to
make the decision for themselves. this was written by the nascent editorial collective. now,
in the absense of a more clear policy on libel and lies i did take it upon myself to do what i
did. get over it! in the future i will endeavor to use the consensus process BEFORE taking
action.
Jeffrey, I made this comment only after you shocked the shit out of me by making an
"editorial decision" without discussing it with anyone. I will reiterate that I totally
understand why you reacted the way you did. And I am glad that in the future you will at
least discuss this with the editoral collective before you make a decision to edit anything--
with the possible exception of an article promoting illegal activity, eg. in detail how to
make a bomb and who to bomb.
Genelle, I agree with everything you wrote, especially about the part to join the editorial
collective. <grin>
Jeffrey, I hope you now take a deep breath and try to understand this whole issue. If I had
to take sides between you and Steve Hampton, I will side with you. If I have to take sides
with someone being physically violent and the victim, I will take sides with the victim. If I
have to take sides with someone being verbally violent (in the case of chevive) and the
person taking the abuse, I will side with the victim. However, the specific point-- and
ONLY the specific point that you made an important decision to censor a note because
someone insulted you, I'm not going to make believe that I agree with your decision. I
hope you understand.
But it's over and done with!! Now let's get onto more important matters that affect the
whole community.
Now I'm going to apologize in advance just in case I'm making the wrong decision to post
this to the Editorial e-mail list and the General e-mail list. But this is where I'm coming
from. And I'm hoping that we can now get onto the more important issues.
And don't get me wrong, I firmly believe that the subject of Steve Hampton is an
important matter which should be discussed. If he is of no positive influence (I don't
know if that's the right word or not) to the whole imc community, and in fact, he is a
negative influence on our community and disrupting and stopping positive progress for the
sole purpose of being disruptive and stopping progress, I think he should be banned. And
I'm perfectly willing to further discuss this.
Last but not least, I propose that the bickering stop. If you want to be part of the decision
making, show up at the General lv-imc meeting and the Editorial Collective meeting.
Bring your notes and ideas with you.
Independent Media Center is an all-volunteer organization. All interested persons are
welcome to join us.
