Alana, All your points are valid.

Re: Any research into other local sites or the main will show you that. Independant media
is there as a free speech outlet and a last bastion of hope for free space in an ever more
censored and controlled world. Removing articles and links to articles, deleting, editing for
content, this is everything that IMC is supposed to protect free speech and expression
from.

I just want to make a point that the hidden articles are not viewable on the seattle
indymedia site:

"Hidden content is not visible on the front newswire archives, and is not included in the
website search function."

http://seattle.indymedia.org/en/static/policy.shtml

I have always believed that the less censorship, the better. But the reason I brought it up
(hidden articles not viewable) was because I thought it might be an acceptable (imc)
option.

Through this discussion I think we are getting close to the best policy we can come up
with. Thanks for all the great views!

I agree with Jason. As a matter of fact, to remove access to that link would
entirely destroy everything that site is supposed to be.

LVIMC is not to be like corporate media. This is about freedom, and some of
these proposals sound as willing to take it away as those we have come
together to fight against. We cannot allow for this reactionary turn in our
handling of contradictions.

LVIMC is an organization that is there as a by the people, for the people
resource and tool. Any research into other local sites or the main will
show you that. Independant media is there as a free speech outlet and a
last bastion of hope for free space in an ever more censored and controlled
world. Removing articles and links to articles, deleting, editing for
content, this is everything that IMC is supposed to protect free speech and
expression from.

Donald, I think you are getting at a very important point by bringing up
that by deleting and looking to expand censoreship we will in fact begin to
become the things that Steve accuses us of.

Joe T, you wrote

"Everyone has the right and prerogative to feel offended by someone else's
comments, especially when those comments are patently hostile and abusive,
as Steve's were. Therefore Jeffrey is 100% justified in deleting those
statements if they offend him."

You are half right, everyone has a right to be offended, what they don't
have is the right to deny freedom of speech because they are personally in
disagreement. Again, this is what IMC is countering, not modeling.

You also wrote

"Nobody can second guess how he took the comments; the comments were caustic
and offensive, and directed at Jeff, and this site belongs to him as much as
to anyone else."

Half right again, and I would argue that no one is second guessing how
anyone feels about anything, because that doesn't matter. The goal of this
site is not to protect personal feelings but to provide a resource to the
community. Also, the site belongs to everyone, and those that have come to
work on it should see themselves as belonging to it and never the other way
around.

Indymedia is a peoples organization centered on the idea of freedom and run
by volunteers who wish to help serve their community. Being more actively
involved in IMC does not grant you any special priviledges in controling it
according to your personal prerogative.

Please, comrades, think very seriously and define to yourself what free
speech means, and then remember that LVIMC is supposed to protect and serve
it. And we are supposed to protect and serve LVIMC

Alana
