This is actually a response to Jeffery's post in the next to last message,
but, what the Hell, you solicited suggestions as to what to do with the
deleted post, so here it is: put the thing in the Hidden Posts section.
Noted in Gail's latest responses that she enclosed a reprint of the LA IMC's
notice about posts advocating illegal and violent activities, death threats
and the like, and I think that a similar notice, prominently placed on
lvimc's Newswire page would be entirely appropriate at this point.
If it has to be printed entirely in bold-faced capital letters, then, that's
what must be done.
However, I don't think it has to be ALL in caps, just the important bits.
On a personal note here, I can't say that I've appreciated some of Mykael's
tactics during this entire debate, but I also don't appreciate the use of
the term "threat to the continued existence of the site", when, to my mind,
the post, while poorly written, stupid and irrational, is not.
It is the rantings of some poor dumb slob with nothing else, alas, better to
do, and, in my opinion, should be treated as such.
Again, to reiterate, the post in question should be hidden, yes. Deleted,
no.
I would agree that there is a communication problem going on within the
Editorial Collective, and, perhaps, within the group as a whole.
The fiercest partisans on both sides of this issue have shown little
inclination to listen to each other on this, and, this is where I agree with
Genelle, ways of establishing trust and solid communication between
Editorial Collective members, and lvimc members in general, need to be
developed and reinforced.
It should also be remembered that this will take time and much work, and
that there will be many errors and mistakes made during this process. Sorry,
Folks, but that's part of the package that comes with being a human being-we
make errors, gaffes and mistakes all the time.
The trick, in my opinion, is to fix them as quickly and expeditiously as
possible, and to try not to repeat them again.
Where I disagree with Genelle is with the manner in which she intially
reacted to the post.
Yes, she contacted Jason, but, unfortunately, Jason is, as far as I know,
not a member of the Editorial Collective. If he is, then I apologise in
advance for any error on that line.
I take it that she contacted Gail, but only after, if I've read the various
posts from both Genelle and Gail correctly, the post had already been
deleted.
I understand that Joe and Alana were out of town(Alana, if am wrong about
you being out of town at that time, Please let me know), but there were
other members of the Editorial Collective here in town.
Now, here's where I take my share of the blame, because I'd not checked my
Hotmail account for two days straight this, I didn't know about this until,
I believe, Wednesday night, and didn't know about this issue until then.
Had I known, I might, through dialogue and consensus, been of some small
assistance with this issue.
But, I wasn't available, and that is entirely my fault.
Still, I think that some sort of consultation, if not with myself, then with
Gail and other members of the EC who were in town, would have been entirely
in order with the idea of consensus-building that we are attempting to
implement here. To do that, however, requires speedy and effective
communication, in part.
In an attempt to correct this problem from my end, I am placing my e-mail
address, Bakuninmeow at hotmail.com and my telephone number, 385-5988, for
emergency decisions that need to be made faster than the speed of e-mail, at
the disposal of the Editorial Collective members.
I have one last further suggestion to make, and that is, while an Editorial
Collective e-mail address list exists, an Editorial Collective phone number
list might also serve, in addition to the e-mail list, for those emergencies
when e-mail is a mite too slow, members are absent, etc.
I thank Jeffery for his comments on my post, and for his suggestion, and
Gail for her examples of posting policies from other Indy Media sites.
Yours, D.
