Racism Help Call during the FIFA World Cup
Coordination meeting:
Mittwoch, 17. Mai, 19 Uhr
ARA-Büro, Admiralstr. 17, U-Bhf. Kottbusser Tor
The World Cup is an event that we are awaiting with mixed feelings. High
feelings for soccer will be one thing; but we also expect rassist
hooligans to convene from all over the world, attacks of German
neo-nazis against foreign fans and the presence of the police with all
the experience we have of rassist acts of violence from part of the
police force; and this is no good news at all. Especially the rassist
attacks of these last few months have clearly demonstrated that: Germany
is a dangerous place to stay.
What shall we do? Many rassist attacks are not reported at all to the
police, as the victims have but no confidence in the police force. This
is where we could start: generally speaking, the victims of racism have
more confidence in someone speaking their own language as this person
can act as a mediator between them and the German administration and
organizations and because she or he is on their side. And because the
German police and administration do not intervene. This brought us to
the idea of a 24-Hours Racism Help Call.
This project targets especially at all people who will be coming from
other countries to Germany for the World Cup and can be seen as
potential victims of rassist violence. It goes without saying that
several languages should be represented. We are thinking of English,
French, Portugues, Arabic, German, Spanish and Turkish (but this list
can be expanded).
I am happy with the echo that this project has received so far: it has
been aupported by almost all organizations. I need the assistance of
everybody in order for the project to be successful.
At the beginning I thought that it would be impossible to meet the
victims, but several organizations that support the project have agreed
to reacht out to them. My intention is to inform our security watchdogs
(police and politicians) on a daily basis about each and any case. This
is the reason why we will list up all the counselling services and
police stations in Berlin and Brandenburg with due regards for the
journalists and the general public.
Needless to say, what I have just said is just the outline of what I am
actually planning to do. I am confident that everybody will contribute
to the discussion during the coordination meeting that I suggest we
should have on Wednesday, May 17th at 7 p.m. at Admiralstraße 17, U-Bhf.
Kottbusser Tor, in the office of ARA. We would like to initiate a broad
debate to help us make a success out of this project.
The project is supported by: AstA TU, Reach Out, Opferperspektive.
ISD-Cybernomads, Ermittlungsausschuss (Investigation Committee), ARI,
Plataforma, Netzwerk Moskito, Flüchtlingsinitiative Brandenburg, The
Flüchtlings Voice, and first and foremost by several individuals.
