Seventh School of Sound Masterclass Series

The seventh School of Sound - a four-day series of master-classes
exploring the creative use of sound with image - will take place from
18-21 April 2007.

Presented by leading artists and practitioners working at the highest
levels of film, music, theatre, dance and installation, the talks
allow each speaker to focus on the way they approach their work
– their influences, inspiration, techniques and innovative ways
of thinking. They explore the relationship between sound, music and
image and the consequent effects in practice.

Sound impacts on all stages of production, so the programme is
designed for directors, editors, sound designers, composers,
producers, writers, sound artists, animators and choreographers
– anyone working with sound. The presentations apply equally to
feature film making, documentaries, animation, radio, games or gallery
presentations. The SoS aims to develop both existing artists and
practitioners and those at an early stage of their careers. It does
not teach hardware or software, but provides stimulus for imagination
and creativity.

Confirmed speakers include Michèle Bokanowski, composer/sound
designer and collaborator with animator Patrick Bokanowski;
Argentinean filmmaker Lucrecia Martel (La Ciénaga, La
Niña santa); Ann Kroeber on the work of her late husband,
sound designer Alan Splet, who created soundtracks for Philip
Kaufman, Carroll Ballard and David Lynch; Paraguayan filmmaker Paz
Encina, whose first feature film, Hamaca Paraguaya, was selected for
the 2006 Cannes Film Festival; composer Mychael Danna, collaborator
with directors Atom Egoyan and Ang Lee; radio producers Piers
Plowright and Alan Hall; sound artist Imogen Stidworthy in
conversation with Steven Connor; music theatre director Heiner
Goebbels; and sound mixer Graham Hartstone, whose extensive credits
include eight James Bond films, Stanley Kubrick’s Eyes Wide
Shut, Ridley Scott’s Blade Runner, and Ken Loach’s Ae
Fond Kiss, in conversation with sound recordist Ray Beckett, best
known for his work on many of Loach’s films.
