A new Festival in the documentary film calendar

March 17th 2007

A Conversation in Film - The London International Documentary Festival™

On Saturday March 17th 2007 PocketVisions will launch the first
London International Documentary Festival (LIDF). In association with
the London Review of Books, and its partner the British Museum,
PocketVisions will begin a unique collaboration with the American
Museum of Natural History’s Margaret Mead Film and Video Festival
(New York).

Alongside films from New York will be work from Serbia, Poland,
France, Italy, Germany, Greece, Spain and the UK, all produced within
the last 18 months.

Festival highlight: "A Different Story"- The first screening outside
of Italy of this controversial film and winner of the Jury prize at
the Turin Festival . The documentary follows the story of Rita
Borsellino's fight for a new political future for Sicily. This
activist’s campaign in 2006, driven by her brother’s brutal murder by
the mafia, captured the imagination and spirit of the youth and
social justice movements. In her attempt to bring down the incumbent
governor, on trial for aiding and abetting the mafia, this film
highlights the violent, long and ambiguous relationship between the
mafia and the Italian republic.

The festival will take place in the Clore Education Centre beneath
the British Museum Great Court (3 theatres).

3 screens running all day (10am to 6pm), a free cafe (run by Mozzo –
organic and fair-trade – ‘Coffee, Art and Community’). 18 films plus
shorts.

The aim of the festival is to use documentary film to stimulate a
series of conversations. The films become both a context and a
pretext for engagement.

So not your usual director’s Q&A’s! The filmmakers will be joined by
academics, journalists, artists and other cultural commentators.
