hi
i met with a represenrative of the legal group yesterday about imc g8 footage
for the dvd. i oarganised this meeting, and other contact with the g8 legal
group, after we were advised to be cautious about certain material, in terms of
there being court cases coming up etc.i wanted to be sure of certain material,
and take whatever steps we need to to make it safe, before going to the
expense of producing lots of video dvds then having to recall them.

it seems from my meeting yesterday that police are not 'looking' for people now
who they didnt arrest at the time, so thats reassuring.

if you have the latest version of the 3rd data dvd we produced during the g8,
(the version with the clown motorway blockade on the 6th july) that material is
ok to screen. i spoke to un on the phone the other day and he/you know/s the
ones i mean. the newer cut versions of 'm9 samba cows' and 'stirling' are on
that latest version of the 3rd disc.

the legal bod did have concerns about another film on that dvd, i wont say wich
here, but the concerns were only if someone can watch it very carefully and
play it back many times. so the latest version of the data dvd material is fine
for screening, but not for distro. good for everyone to know that.

about the screening, its fantastic that a screening is being organised and the
g8 issues being kept in the public eye, fantastic and good energy. thankyou un
for your work on this, i think tis important. i do however share concerns about
having a member of a political party on a panel of an indymedia event. not for
any kind of reactionary stubourn or ill considered reason, but because of the
principles on which indymedia has formed and developed. for example, when
posting an article, there are guidelines which have been formed by many people
over time and experience, which include saying that a posting which is
promoting a political party is breaking guidelines. thats how we can hide
articles sneakily written by the swp and posing as 'articles', and not have the
newswire swamped with that.
so its about the collective culture of indymedia, and erring on the side of
caution in temrs of political parties. so far this has helped guard indy from
being bogged down by political propaganda or arguments and debates between or
about political parties: who likes which politicians / party or why or why not
etc....
also , its such an understood principle that it may seem like an 'unwitten rule'
or a bit sinister!, but people have been contributing to indy for years becasue
they feel safe to do so because of understood common principles like this which
people can work with despite other differences. its left people free to just get
on with the indy project, and an amazing project it is too!!

weather or not theres times and situations where this needs to be newly debated,
in itself possibly needs to be open for debate. if only to reiterate why certain
principles were put in place.
