It is discouraging, but there are many other things one can do to help the overall picture.  My suggestion to you would be to first change yourself, grow spiritually....open up to all the possibilities.  Like Ghandi said "be the change you see in the world".  There are many ways to do this....spirituality is not a requirement but can help with giving you insights into what one can do to make a positive change in our world.
