: : Oceania Indymedia Newsreal 3 : Call for Submissions : :
The Oceania Indymedia Newsreal compiles short, critical films focussing on
social and environmental issues in the Asia-Pacific region. Bringing
together stories from independent producers and community media collectives
the Oceania Newsreal is distributed on VCD and online via the website.
The newsreal aims to encourage content sharing between regional Indymeida
centres and video collectives, community TV and independent video producers.
Likewise the online component allows works to be distributed easily across
the globe and for people to download and screen them in their local area.
The films are distributed under the creative commons license.

We are now looking for content for our 3rd edition. If you have a piece you
think might fit the bill and you want to see it more widely distributed then
send it in.
Submissions are due January 21st. See the submission guidelines here

Government ignores evidence on asylum seeker family
25/12/2004
It is rumored that the Government may forcibly deport the Bakhtiyari family
to Pakistan on a Malaysian airlines flight on Sunday (Boxing Day). Evidence
of the Bakhtiyari family originating in Afghanistan was faxed to the
Minister for Immigration, Amanda Vanstone, on 21st January 2004. (See the
full fax - PDF 1.9mb) or read this Barrister's note on the evidence.
Christmas Solidarity fast for Asylum seekers
25/12/2004
On Christmas Day a solidarity fast occurred outside Flinders Street Station
for the Iranians in detention at Baxter Detention centre in South Australia.
On Christmas Eve the latest news on the Iranian Hungerstrike was that the
Baxter hunger strike reached medical emergency stage - and ended.
2004 the Fourth Warmest Year On Record
25/12/2004
>From www.indymedia.org...
The World Meteorological Organization (WMO) has determined that 2004 was the
fourth warmest year since accurate records commenced in 1861. The last 10
years (1995-2004), with the exception of 1996, are among the warmest 10
years on record.
Bakhtiyari family facing forced deportation
24/12/2004
The family of Ali Bakhtiyari were raided unannounced on December 18, and
forced back to detention. Forced deportation to Pakistan of this Hazara
family from Afghanistan may be immanent. This comes despite overwhelming
evidence from a barrister provided to the Minister for Immigration to
substantiate the family's claims. This must raise questions on the
accountability of DIMIA and particularly the Minister for Immigration,
Amanda Vanstone, who has admitted never reading the case file on the family.
No Room at the Inn for the Homeless
24/12/2004
A day after a $6.2billion budget surplus was announced, the federal
government announced that $30 million slashed from funding of Australian
homelessness services over the next five years; beautifully timed to bring
Christmas cheer to Australia's homeless and victims of domestic
violence. "Pity there is not the same laisser faire approach as there is
with defence, when it comes to sheltering the most vulnerable in our
community for a fraction of the cost!" said a contributor.
Conservationists face 'violent tactics' from loggers
23/12/2004
Conservationists are currently seeking legal advice after narrowly escaping
rolling logs this morning when they went to conduct a peaceful protest in
old growth forest in Ellery, far East Gippsland. Machinery was then used to
place another large log behind their vehicle to obstruct their departure.
