Jack Thomas to face trial under anti-terrorism laws
11/04/2005
Melbourne man Jack Thomas has been committed to stand trial on three
charges brought by the Australian government under the Commonwealth's
new anti-terrorist legislation. The charges are, receiving funds from a
terrorist organisation, providing support to a terrorist organisation
and possessing a false passport. Mr Thomas was only recently released
on bail from Barwon prison where he was held in solitary confinement
for up to 23 hours a day.
Indigenous Elder arrested at Aboriginal Tent Embassy
06/04/2005
Arabunna Elder Mr Kevin Buzzacott was arrested tonight at the
Aboriginal Tent Embassy in Canberra and charged with contempt of court.
He had been appearing in the ACT Supreme Court over the past week to
contest a charge of theft, which relates to his removal of the Kangaroo
and Emu (displayed on the Australian coat of arms) from outside the Old
Parliament House. Mr Buzzacott has stated that the Commonwealth had not
gained permission to use these Aboriginal symbols and that their use is
in breach of international law, as the Commonwealth was never granted
consent to occupy aboriginal lands.
