Unions worldwide have always been an important part of how communities
defend their rights and act for social justice and change. Yet the
place of trade unions in Australian society is being fundamentally
challenged.
"Unions, Communities and Social Change" is a five week seminar series
that will explore the complex and sometimes contested relationship
between unions and other community organisations in campaigns for
social change, and the contemporary challenge for unions and community
organisations to work together to rescue some of the basic democratic
rights being destroyed by new Federal Government policy.

"Unions and Communities Working Together: History and Issues"
JACK MUNDEY (former Secretary NSW BLF) and SEAN SCALMER (Macquarie
University) will explore how unionists and community campaigners have
met some of the challenges of building alliances and mounting
campaigns across organised labour and social movements.

Sunday Apr. 30, 11:00am - 5:00pm
Buses leave from Trades Hall, cnr Lygon and Victoria Sts
Event Topic: Civil Liberties

The maximum security Barwon prison currently houses the ten Melbourne
men arrested under the new anti-terrorist laws in November last year.
They have not gone to trial and have been found guilty of nothing --
but the legislative presumption against bail means that they've spent
the last six months in Guantanamo Bay-style conditions, shackled and
in solitary confinement for much of the day.
Join us for a solidarity trip to Barwon to stand up for their rights
and to reject the climate of intimidation and fear sweeping away our
most basic democratic rights.
Speakers, entertainment, a halal BBQ and a chance to pass on messages
of support to those inside.
Buses leave from Trades Hall, cnr Lygon and Victoria Sts; return by 5pm.
