Dear Friends,
As the article below from yesterdays Sun Sentinal indicates the Broward
County Library has decided to ban the showing of the film Motorcycle Diaries from
this years Hispanic festival.

In yesterdays email ( which was written in outrage at the spur of the moment
after just arriving home from Washington) I mistakenly stated that
Congresswomen Debbie Wasserman-Schultz promoted this banning. I was wrong and I
sincerely apologize to the Congresswomen and all of you for this serious error.
The politician responsible for this despicable act of censorship is Broward
County Commissioner Dianna Wasserman-Rubin who wants to bring some good old
Miami style intimidation to Broward county. She apparently is proud to be
promoting this kind of censorship! Please take the time out to call her office and
let her know how you feel. Her office number is 954-357-7008.

Also please call the Broward County Library at 954-357-7444 and ask for the
Libraries Division Director Robert Cannon to express opposition to the
banning of the film from the festival. The Library is claiming they're not banning
the film, just "postponing" it, but as the article indicates below, this was
a political act of censorship carried out due to political pressure by
right-wing Cubans opposed to the films content. The library has rescheduled the
film to be shown on November 7 so that it won't be part of Hispanic Heritage
Month.

The Broward County Antiwar Coalition and the Bolivarian Youth will hold a
demonstration at the time the film was scheduled to be shown on Monday October
3rd at 5:30 PM outside of the Southwest Regional Library at 16835 Sheridan
Street in Pembroke Pines. Please spread the word and try to join us in
protesting this attack on our 1st Amendment Rights.

Best Regards,
Jack Lieberman

Protests halt showing of Motorcycle Diaries at Broward library

Sun-Sentinel
Posted September 27 2005

A controversial film on Cuban revolutionary Che Guevara will not be shown
during Hispanic Heritage Month after all.

After community protests, the film Motorcycle Diaries has been postponed. It
was scheduled to be shown at the Broward County Southwest Regional Library
in Pembroke Pines on Oct. 3, during the statewide Sept. 15-Oct. 15 celebration.
We've rescheduled it so as not to offend," said library director Robert
Cannon. He did not have the new date late Monday.

Cuban-born County Commissioner Diana Wasserman-Rubin said her staff had
received numerous calls and e-mails protesting the movie, which shows how
Guevara's youthful travels fed his revolutionary fervor.
