Two Presentations on Guantanamo Detentions on December 12

A multimedia program, "Guantanamo: What the World Should Know," will be presented twice in Milwaukee on Sunday, December 12, 2004, beginning at 10:30 am at the Islamic Society of Milwaukee, 4707 S. 13th St. (just off the I-94 Layton Ave. exit), and also at 12:30 pm at the First Unitarian Society of Milwaukee, 1342 N. Astor St. (corner of Astor and Ogden). Both events are free and open to the public.

The program is inspired by the book of the same name by Michael Ratner, President of the Center for Constitutional Rights, who successfully brought the case before the U.S. Supreme Court, challenging the legality of indefinite detention of suspects being interrogated in Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, without charges or legal counsel.

The programs will feature live readings, taped comments by Nobel Peace Prize laureate Archbishop Desmond Tutu of South Africa, and excerpts from both the 2004 Australian documentary "The President vs. David Hicks" and from the play "Guantanamo: Honor Bound to Protect Freedom."

Alberto Gonzales, President Bush's nominee to replace John Ashcroft as U.S. Attorney General, wrote a memo as White House counsel, suggesting that the Geneva convention protections for prisoners of war not be recognized for those being held at the U.S. Naval base at Guantanamo Bay in Cuba. The International Committee of the Red Cross subsequently determined that the conditions there amount to torture. Mr. Gonzales' nomination to become the nation's top law enforcement officer is expected to come before both Wisconsin senators as members of the Judiciary Committee in January 2005.

The presentations are being made available as a public service by the Wisconsin Coalition to Normalize Relations with Cuba, and the Milwaukee Chapter of the National Lawyers Guild. For further information, including for additional bookings, call (414) 273-1040, ext. 12, or visit www.wicuba.org.
