April 9 "Celebration of Latin American Music" at the Coffeehouse in Milwaukee to Benefit Caravan to Cuba
The Coffeehouse, 631 N. 19th Street, in Milwaukee, will host a "Celebration of Latin American Music" on Sunday April 9, from 7pm to 9pm, in support of the upcoming caravan of humanitarian aid to Cuba.
The program will include folk songs of Latin America and lyric poetry, presented by Tony and Eva Baez, and Carlos Escalera and Rick Yocum, followed by the irresistible Latin beat of Guagua Eléctrica.
Tony Baez is a well known U.S./Puerto Rican educator, musician and singer, who will present songs of love and struggle from throughout the Americas, and be joined by Eva Baez reading poetry from Eduardo Galeano's trilogy, Memory of Fire. Carlos Escalera is a singer and songwriter from Chiapas, Mexico, whose verses reveal the nuances of life, performing with Anglo-Native American guitarist Rick Yocum who "cries out to touch your spirit." The evening will end with the pulsating salsa rhythm and beat of "Guagua Eléctrica," a combo featuring Miguel de Jesus and other Latino performers.
This is a benefit for the Wisconsin Coalition to Normalize Relations with Cuba, www.wicuba.org, in support of the Pastors for Peace upcoming Friendshipment Caravan to Cuba, which will visit Milwaukee on June 24, 2006. This is a travel challenge in which participants bring donated medical and other aid in as an act of civil disobedience in defiance of the 45 year U.S. economic blockade of Cuba.
Admission is by free will offering, with $10 donation suggested. For advance tickets and other information, call (414) 273-1040.
