Hi,
I am sending this to the open Indymedia Northern list (so I'm bcc ing people's individual emails).
JimDog has offered to bring some tech (projectors, screens, laptops..) and I might be able to help him out.
I think we can run a workshop session on internet security and offer advice e.t.c. Was the Mule planning on doing a Journalism one (i.e. the importance of independent media and how that is slipping away...)?
Sorry I didn't reply much earlier,
Cheers,
nab (one of imc northern england)

Hey there
I am sending this to a few people who have expressed an interest in getting involved in organising/facilitating media sessions at the Network X Gathering.
This is to bring together a few separate discussions I have been having with people on the emails regarding. If there are any other people you think might be interested in getting involved or helping organise feel free to forward this email.
A few things it appears we need to think of before laying anything out:
*
Structure and agenda: to be discussed before the Network X Gathering. What do we want to achieve from the gathering in terms of media?
*
How to work together/collaborate: existing networks/collectives and individuals. Look towards a Network website/blog or a national aggregating site which brings together many existing radical/alternative news outlets?
Then there have been some ideas for workshop/sessions. I would summarise them as:
*
Different forms of media (print, web, audiovisual, radio etc)
*
How to set up your own print/web collective: processes and practicalities
*
Publishing, stories and outreach
*
Tech security: secure communication, anonymity in blogging, IP logging
Let us know your thoughts and if you are up for helping out with these.
Cheers

My thoughts are that this all seems like a good idea!
I'm up for keeping quiet and occasionally chipping in on the media
production side.
I'm up for up for helping facilitate workshops that look at secure hosting
/ blogging, and aggregating / swapping content on a technical level. I
would hope to include non techie people but also let tech swap the info
that they need.
I'll bring along copies of this leaflet -

Cool
Well I definately fit into the category of 'non-techie' person and I would be up for learning some skills! They sound look good workshop ideas. Have you run them before?
Robbie has expressed an interest so I think he and I could do more of the organisation/process side of things, looking at outreach as well.

I've run most of them before - The email one takes quite a bit of time,
the rest are pretty straight forward.
The other tech ones would be using statusnet - which is an alternative /
gateway into twitter / face book
A version of that is at http://indy.im
I know someone who is coming who could do a very good workshop that.
Also the secure blogging set up is, I think definately worth doing a
short practical thing on.
If you have time then email me to ask for an account at this testing site.

This is what I'm really pushing and looking for feedback on. Shortly we
are looking at picking a new domain name, and starting this service for
people.
Let me know if you can help test it and i'll email a log in for it.
You'll be able to set up a blog and test if it has the right plugins for
you to do what you would need (or could imagine needing)
thanks

An overview type session on the Saturday may be of more interest, and then possibly doing something more focussed in response to demand on the Sunday if needed. Given the size and diversity, there will be a set of different people interested. If you have multiple people, you could always split a session into intro/advanced.
Am happy to take a look at blogs.clearerchannel, but I wont be able to help with the session itself.

Also organisers apparently want there to be 6 sessions taking place at the same time, so that should mean there would be time to do different media sessions simultaneously or different levels.
I think it would be a good idea to roughly plan a few sessions but then be flexible with it on the day.
Can we arrange a meeting for those who are interesting in facilitating/running workshops at the Network X gathering this weekend?
Maybe tomorrow or Wednesday afternoon/evening? Let us know when people are available and where is best to meet.
Cheers

I can't make those times sorry feel free to give me a ring.
I'm ccing in Mike and Mark from Hacktionlab and Northern Indymedia.
Because I can't make it, it would be good to include them in these
discussions.
I can vouch for them, we put on a weekend of over 30 workshops last
year. And we wrote the tech tools for activist together also -

I think it would be good to have a second workshop slot planned after
Sunday lunch as there is break out space then too.
I'm sorry I can't make it. I'm going to Berlin to help write a book
about 'the open web' in a week! It may even be of use later.
