Among the problems with not being able to have
pictures on the nyc website is that it makes an
important story like this impossible to verify or to
convey to our readers.

This is why this problem needs to be fixed, like, two
days ago.

 November 3rd

                        Tonight around 6pm in Union
Square the police came in from behind on a small crowd
gathered post election. What made tonight's backward
approach by the NYPD different, is that tonight they
had their fingers on the triggers of machine guns.
The crowd was small and quiet, excepting a chant
for "Money for Jobs and Education, not for War and
Occupation." Young, articulate speakers urged
bypassers and the small crowd to resist and to
continue calling for an end to the war in Iraq. As
this reporter was heading home, a call was heard: "No
machine guns in the park!" I looked to the north of
Union Square to see men in black with machine guns and
fingers on the trigger, at attention facing the backs
of the small crowd. I walked forward with my camera
on them to get an ID badge, there were no ID badges on
the riflemen's chests, only NYPD patches on their
shoulders. More police started to approach, and the
small crowd started chanting "No machine Guns in the
Park!" No machine guns in the park!" Then more
police approached, and the small crowd came up behind
the photographers (from the south end). As more
videographers and photographers came, this reporter
went to see if the police were going to surround the
gathering from all sides. Amazingly, after about 20
minutes, the police took their machine guns and the
german shepherd back to the Northeast side of the park
where they had the whole east side of the park lined
with a line of motorcycles and about ten vehicles
consisting of police vans, paddy wagons, and an SUV.
As I reviewed my footage waiting for the train, the
woman sitting next to me said: "What are the rifles
for? Are they because we did not vote for Bush?"

Soon we will post videos and photo to accompany this
article.
