  hi all,

well, Ari and I had the first tele-photo meeting in nyc imc history.
sorry to miss you all.

one thought I had that is separate from the micro picture of
assignments and spot news reporting and such is about developing
'beats" for ourselves. for lack of a better word.

For instance, recently, I have been interested in housing issues and
immigration issues. So, for now, i'd say that is kind of my beat. Both
are obviously huge topics but I am interested in going a bit deeper in
my reporting. To develop an understanding of an issue. and now through
some of this work, i'm connecting with all sorts of different people
who do work on this issue. so, it's making a knowledge network. and
that makes me a better reporter and photographer i think because i am
more informed.

So, pulling back, i thought about others on our lovely photo team.
Andy's been working on iraqi veteran stories. ida seems drawn to lgbt
issues. Please correct me, add to, expand andy and ida who i've used
as examples...But if we all were aware of what each other liked to
shoot, want to work on, in this way, then I think we could create
additional community between us, referring people/stories to each other
and to become more involved and informed ourselves. what would you
like to 'cover' for the indy? what would you like to look at from an
independent point of view?

i hope we can get some discussion going and that developing ourselves
as photographers in this way, if you want to, will lead to more
enterprising stories and work that will happen through a long term view
and a long term investment into the myriad facets of life in NYC.

ok. hope all are well and look forward to talking on line.

PS. mock up is this thursday, that's march 10. 7pm at the INDY. this
is the time when you say what you would like to contribute to the paper
and it goes up and we see what's produced and how it all fits together.
