yeah, they're a great foundation. i've gotten grants from them in the past
for the thomas merton center. and the application process is pretty easy.
one thing, though - the deadline has passed for this year (i think it was
the beginning of february). they do have Special Opportunity Grants for $500
that are on-going throughout the year but you have to prove that it is a
sort-of emergency rather than something that could be applied for during
their regular grant cycle. they also have events throughout the year (food,
mingling, grant-writing workshops) that are really good to go to - the best
way to getting a grant is often by sparking one of the committee members'
interest just by informally chatting about it. and they're all really
personable people from what i remember.
"Of course the people don't want war. But after all, it's the leaders of
the country who determine policy, and it's always a simple matter to drag
the people along whether it's a democracy, a fascist dictatorship, or a
parliament or a communist dictatorship. Voice or no voice, the people can
always be brought to the bidding of their leaders. That is easy. All you
have to do is tell them they are being attacked, and denounce the pacifists
for lack of patriotism, and exposing the country to greater danger."
--Hermann Goering to Gustave Gilbert, as quoted in the Nuremburg Diary
