I'm the sort of anti-authoritarian freak who likes to see things
go as they might.  Even if it is mudslinging, I've generally found
that people who are around to do so eventually leave.  Doing the
easy removal of the link from the main page would likely deter
future trolls from freely finding the area, but allow what is the
most active part of the site to remain in use.

Plus, distilling the noise from the signal in comments in the past
has given me info on things happening, so I do like them. :)

One option I just thought of though... perhaps making a purely
"discussion forums" area for people to do this in, leaving the
newswire bare for people who just want to check the news?  I've
seen this happen for a lot of online places.  It would mean more
effort, etc, but perhaps try removing the link and seeing if things
die down after a couple to few weeks... if that fails, move to a
more removed step like this?
