The Indymedia Netherlands collective supports the request for
desaffiliation of the Indymedia Belgium collective based on its own
expriences with that collective.
We have several indications something is seriously wrong with the imc-be
collective:
*
in their relationship towards the Dutch indymedia collective they
have clearly shown they don't put into practice the first point of
the principles of unity, through several incidents we know they
don't see us as equal or respect our autonomy.
*
We don't know how they organise within the collective, but from
the book “media activisme” (only in Dutch) written by three of its
collective members,where they clearly state being indymedia
activists, they show black on white not to respect point 6 of the
principles of unity towards activists and the population “All
IMC's recognize the importance of process to social change and are
committed to the development of non-hierarchical and
anti-authoritarian relationships, from interpersonal relationships
to group dynamics.” That is not compatibel with the way they
explain in the book how spontaneous protests can be manipulated
and this manipulation is described as a normal act of media activists.

Also through our direct experience with the collective, we learned
that they don't respect point 8 of the PoUeither.” All IMC's are
committed to caring for one another and our respective communities
both collectively and as individuals and will promote the sharing
of resources including knowledge, skills and equipment”. Not even
in the worst of times.

We also noticed they don't seem to respect point 4 of the PoU,
through one of the incidents they created towards us.
*
Some incidents are not directly related to the PoUbut seem equally
worrying and have consequences for Dutch (media)activism
We come to this conclusion based on the following facts and incidents we
were confronted with:
*
Since january of 2003 there have been 49 postings about the
Belgian situation on the Dutch newswire, mostly by Belgian left
wing activists and indymedia volunteers. (some including flamewars
in the comment section)
This is a sign that the situation is affecting neighbouring imc's
in their daily functionning.
*
A collective member who (along with other Dutch activists)
travelled to Belgium for an anti-gmo action was forbidden to film
at that action when she said she was an “indymedia” volunteer,
even if some members of the corporate media were invited to follow
that same action and were allowed to film freely. This is an
indication that Belgian grassroots activists don't just judge
indymedia Belgium as possibly dangerous for their cause, but
Indymedia as a whole. (with this creating doubt about indymedia in
the minds of Dutch activists)

In september of 2003 they tried to interfere in our editorial
decisions, asking us to hide an article they claimed was false,
but we had checked it out (as we usually do) and the information
in that article happened to be correct (the Arab European League
linking to antisemite websites on their own site) . There was a
conflict about that between our editorial team and Indymedia
Belgium. The article had been reposted on Indymedia Belgium and
there it was not only hidden (which was their free choice) but
tampered with, when they found out who had copied it, they
infringed his right to anonimity (pt 4 in the POU) putting his
real name as the author (he wasn't even the original author) which
greatly worried us; they also started a flamewar in the comment
section under that article.

On several occasions they contacted (or were contacted by) the
Dutch corporate media without letting us know about it or refering
to the Dutch collective, one of the occasions was in may of 2003,
when three members of the Belgian Indymedia collective published a
book about media activism and included the Netherlands in their
promotion campaign (also without consulting with us or even
warning us). When we told them we were contacted by one of the
programs who wanted to incude the view of indymedia Netherlands in
the topic, and if we could please have a(n electronic) copy of the
book to be able to prepare oursleves for the requested press
contact, they told us we'd have to wait till the book came out
(weeks after the requested interview) and pay like anybody else or
wait till september when it would be available on line.

The book itself, written by three imc-be members profiling
themselves as such, has a very particular view on media activism
that in no way coresponds with the views of the Dutch indymedia
collective (the practical part being more about how a political
activist can use media activism to manipulate the population and
how media activism can be used to try and get the protesting
groups to join “the activists cause”, how a popular outrage can be
recuperated for particular political motives through media
activism, then about giving voice to their actual concerns with
their protests and actions). At first we wanted to ask the
bookstores to add a leaflet pointing out indymedia Netherlands
position on the book, but we didn't want to push it to a conflict
and the leaflet was menacing to turn into a book itself.

We came across another infringement of our autonomy (or of
ignoring our existance)in june of 2004. One of the major events on
the Dutch activist agenda was the EU summit on migration in
Groningen on November tenth, an organising group formed in March
and a member of the Dutch collective that lives in Groningen
joined as an Indymedia liaison to organise a Media center with
radio, dispatch and an open access space. Much to her surprise she
heard at one of the meetings that Indymedia Belgium, out of the
blue, through one of the organisations in the platform (the New
Communist Party of the Netherlands)announced they would come to
Groningen and set up a media center and do radio (which they never
did before while the Netherlands has radio activists on allmost
every streetcorner). The N10 platform kindly asked them to
coordinate with Indymedia Netherlands and they were never heard of
again on that matter, even if a mail was sent out to invite them
and other imc's to participate.

The last incident with Indymedia Belgium that Indymedia
Netherlands was involved in was during the Ahimsa crisis, when the
Belgian Local collectives, that were all on ahimsa, asked us if
they could post their press releases and news updates on indymdia
Netherlands since indymedia Belgium , where they originally posted
them, found it necessary to hide or alter their postings and
remove any referals to contact information or put them under older
articles, thus imposing themselves as the contacts/spokespeople
for the local imc's, trying to avoid to a maximum the local
collectives had any contacts with the press. (most of that was
altered back to its original status after a few weeks, when the
storm had luered and the corporate press lost intrest).

Indymedia Pays-Bas soutient la desaffiliation d' Indymedia Belgique,
base sur ses propres experiences avec ce collectif.
Nous avons plusieurs indications que les choses vont très mal avec le
collectif du cmi-be:
*
Dans leur relations avec le collectif d' indymedia Pays-Bas ils
ont motré clairement ne pas pratiquer le premier point des
principes d' unité, a travers plusieurs incidents nous avons
appris qu' ils ne nous voyent pas comme egaux et qu' ils ne
respectent pas notre autonomie en tant que collectif.

Nous ne sommes pas au courant de leur organisation interne, mais
par la lecture d' un livre (seulement en Néerlandais), écrit par
trois membres du collectif , s' identifiant clairement comme
membres du dit collectif, ils montrent noir sur blanc de ne pas
respecter le point 6 des principes d' unité vis à vis des
activistes et la population en général”Tous les IMC reconnaissent
l'importance du projet de changement social et sont engagés au
développement de relations non hierarchicales et non autoritaires,
aussi bien dans les relations interpersonnelles que dans les
dynamiques des groupes.“ Ce principe n' est pas compatible avec la
façon dont ils expliquent dans le livre comment on peut manipuler
des actes de protestation spontanées et comment cette manipulation
est décrite comme un acte normal de media-activsme.

Aussi par nos experiences directes avec le collectif, nous avons
appris qu' ils ne respectent pas le point 8 des principes d' unité
“Tous les IMC seront engagés à s'occuper des uns et des autres et
de nos communautés respectives à la fois collectivement et
individuellement, et promouvront le partage des ressources
incluant les connaissances, les savoir-faire et les équipements.”
Même pas dans les circontances les plus pénibles.

Nous avons également constatés q' ils ne respectent pas le point 4
des PU non plus, à travers un des incidents qu' ils ont crées
envers nous.

Quelques autres incidents ne sont pas liés aux PU mais nous
paraissent très préoccupants et ils ont des conséqences pour l'(e
media) activisme aux Pays-Bas
Nous sommes arrivés à cette conclusion basé sur les faits et incidents
suivants:
*
Depuis janvier 2003, 49 postings concernant la situation Belge ont

activistes de la gache en Belgique et de bénévoles d' indymedia.

commentaires) Ce qui est un signe du fait que la situation Belge à
ses effèts sur le fonctionnement des cmi voisinants.

Un membre du collectif NL, qui était parti en Belgique avec un
groupe d' activistes Néerlandais, pour une action anti-omg à été
défendu de filmer pendant l' action, parce que elle disait que c'
était pour indymedia , tout ça pendant que la presse corporatiste
était invité à suivre l' action et pouvait filmer librement, ce
qui indique que les activstes grassroots en Belgique, ne jugent
pas suelement indymedia Belgique en tant que possiblement nuisible
à leur cause, mais indymedia en général (tout en créant des doutes
à propos d' indymedia dans les esprits des activistes Néerlandais)

En septembre 2003 ils ont essayé d' intervenir dans notre
politique éditoriale, nous demandant de cacher un article qu' ils
disaient faut. Mais on avait déjà vérifié les faits (comme on fait
d' habitude) et les faits décrits dans l' article étaient bel et
bien vrais. (la ligue arabe européenne qui avait un lein vers un
site antisemite sur leur site. Il y a eue une dispute à propos de
ce posting entre notre collectif et indymedia Belgique.L' article
en question avait été resposté sur le site d' indymedia Belgique
ou il n' a pas seulement été caché (ce qui était leur libre choix)
mais aussi manipulé. Quand ils ont trouvé qui avait copié le
posting sur leur site, ils ont changé le pseudo utilisé dans le
posting en le vrai nom de la personne en question comme auteur,
ainsi violant son droit à l' anonymité garantie (et il n' était
même pas le vrai auteur), ce qui nous préocuppait beacoup. En plus
ils ont commencé un flamewar dans les commentaires sous l' article
en question

Plusieurs fois ils ont contacté (ou bien été contacté par) les
Mdias corporatistes aux Pays-Bas, sans nous avertir, ni réferer
les médias en question vers nous. L' un de ses occasions était
pendant le mois de mai de 2003, lors de la campagne médiatique
concernant un livre sur le média-activisme écrit par trois des
membres du collectif indymedia Belgique qu' ils ont choisit de
promouvoir aux Pays-Bas (aussi sans nous consulter ou nous faire
part de leurs intentions de le faire). Au moment ou nous les avons
contactés parce que l' un des programmes voulait inclure les
points de vus d' Indymedia Pays-Bas dans le sujet, et si 'l y
avait moyen d' obtenir une copie (electronique) du livre pour qu'
on puisse se préparer pour le contact avec la presse, ils nous on
dit qu' on devait attendre l'apparition du livre et l' acheter
comme tout le monde ou attendre qu' il soit publié sur internet au
mois de septembre.

Le livre lui même, écrit par trois membres du collectif indymedia
Belgique, se profilant comme tel, presente une vision très
particulière du média-activisme, qui ne coresponds d' aucune façon
avec les visions du collectif Indymedia Pays-Bas (la parti
pratique relatant plus comment un activste politique peut se
servir du média-activisme pour manipuler la population et comment
le média-activisme peut servir a essayer de convaincre les groupes
contestataires à se joindre à la “cause de l' activste”, sur
comment recuperer l' outrage populaire pour des motifs politiques
particuliers à travers le media-activisme, plustôt que sur comment
leurs donner la voix et faire entendre les buts et exigences
formulés en mènant leurs actions de protestation) Au début on
voulait demander aux librairies d' ajouter un feuillet au livres,
dans lequel Indymedia Pays-Bas voullait expliquer sa position sur
le livre, mais on ne l' a pas fait pour ne pas pousser au conflit
et parce que le feuillet menaçait de devenir un autre livre.

Nous sommes tombés sur une autre infraction sur notre autonomie
(ou une ignoration de notre existance) en juin 2004. L' un des
evenements les plus importants du calendrier activiste était le
sommet Européen sur la migration à Groningen le dix novembre. Au
mois de mars un groupe d' organisations' est formé et l' un des
membres du collectif NL, habitant à Gronginen à rejoint ce groupe
comme liaison d' indymedia Pays-Bas, pour organiser in media
center avec radio, dispatch et un espace libre accès. A sa grande
surprise, pendant l' une des réunion de la plate – forme elle à
apris que Indymedia Belgique, en tombant du ciel, via l' un des
organisations faisant parti de la plate-forme( le NCPN, nouveau
parti communiste des Pays-Bas) annonçait qu' ils allaient venir à
Groningen pour monter un Media center et faire de la radio (ce qu'
ils n' avaient jamais fait, et ça dans un pays ou l' on trouve un
activiste radio sur chaque coin de rue) La plate-forme N10 leur à
demandé gentiment de coordiner avec Indymedia Pays-Bas et on ne
les à plus entendu sur le sujet en question, même pas quand on à
envoyé un mail pour inviter les autres cmi qui pourraient s' y
interesser (dont indymedia Belgique) a participer à cette action.

Le dernier incident avec Indymedia Belgique dans lequel indymedia
Pays-Bas s' est trouvé mêlé était pendant la crise Ahimsa, quand
les collectif locaux Belges, qui se trouvaient tous sur ce
serveur, nous ont demandé s' ils pouvaient poster leurs
communiqués de presse et leurs mises à jour sur le site indymedia
Nl, parce que indymedia Belgique, ou ils les avaient postés au
début à trouvé necessaire de cacher ou modifier les postings,
enlever les références aux données de contacts des collectifs
locaux ou de mettre les commentaires avec ses données sous des
autres autres articles, plus anciens, ainsi s' imposant comme
point de contact/porte parole des collectifs locaux, faisant tout
leur possible pour éviter que les collectifs locaux aient des
contacts avec la presse (la plus part de ses manipulations ont été
remis dans leur état original quelques semaines après, quand la
tempète était fini et que la presse corporatiste à perdu son
interesse pour le problème)
