COMMUNITY FORUMS

GAY GENTRIFICATION:
What role do LGBT people play in the gentrification of neighborhoods?

March 8, 2005, 6:30pm - 8:30pm
the LGBT Community Center 208 W. 13th Street, room 301
Chelsea… The West Village… Harlem… Park Slope… Hell’s Kitchen

Queers are living in the communities being gentrified, and are getting
pushed out along with straight folks. We are part of families, have low income,
are long-term residents, & are people of color. We are part of community
organizations working against gentrification -- including the ones we've formed.

However, queers are also part of the gentrifying force. What are the
effects of white LGBT people moving into neighborhoods targeted for gentrification?
What are the class and race tensions that develop between new residents,
usually white, and long-term residents, who are often low-income people of
color?
How do queer people of color living in these neighborhoods negotiate these
tensions, whether we are new or long-term residents? What are the special
issues facing LGBT youth and transgender people in neighborhoods that undergo
gentrification?
How does all this affect our ideas & feelings of “queer community” and “
queer community organizing”? Are these tensions represented in queer community
organizing? How & how not?

What are specific ways that folks living in these specific communities can
get involved in anti-gentrification efforts? What are the specific organizing
tools that we can use? (& who is the we?) How can we continue to build,
build new, and sustain anti-gentrification coalitions?
