[imc-rochester] Fwd: [ithuu] Free Forum on Hydrofracking with Dick Gilbert

I would appreciate it were someone to tape this and put it on-line,
preferable on blip as that makes it easier to find downloadable files.

Better, I'd love to see some participation by Rochester videographers in
our network for videographers and other media artists and activists
Shaleshock Media <http://shaleshockmedia.org/>.

We are starting to syndicate programming for public access t.v.. This
is both ready to cablecast shows and content that you can use for
derivative work. As soon as I or someone else has the time to do this,
we will be having a calendar for public access programing related to gas
drilling. This should have a drop down for Ithaca, Binghamton, Watkins
Glen (will be starting to cablecast programming soon), Rochester?

Please give this some consideration. Please get in touch with me with
any questions or for details.

Thanks,

Cris

*Lobby Day on Hydrofracking - Monday, May 2, 2011*

As we wrote in last month’s newsletter, New York Interfaith Power &
Light is gearing up once again for Earth Day Lobby Day, traditionally
the biggest environmental event of the year in Albany. Earth Day Lobby
Day is generally held as close to Earth Day as possible. This year New
York Interfaith Power & Light will focus on natural gas drilling, also
known as hydrofracking.

New York Public Interest Research Group and Environmental Advocates of
New York are spearheading the event, which has featured New York’s
Governor for the past three years.Other organizations involved in
planning are Citizens Campaign for the Environment, the Sierra Club, and
Audubon.

Come for the opportunity to hear interesting speakers and meet with your
elected representatives at the State Capitol. We will provide tips and
information for people who have not lobbied before.

We have rented a bus to give participants a fun, “green” way to attend
Earth Day Lobby Day. The bus will have stops in Syracuse, Binghamton,
and along I-88. We will provide bus riders with a delicious lunch
(included with the $10 ticket price).

Please plan to register even if you will not be joining us on the bus or
buying lunch. If you wish to participate in the full day event, you must
pre-register so we can assign you to a lobby team.We will have a
registration form at our website <http://www.nyipl.org/>shortly.

For more information call (315) 256-0078.

*Congressional Attacks on the EPA*

Many members of the U.S. House of Representatives are working to
drastically undermine the authority of the EPA to enforce the Clean Air
Act and other public health protections, including regulating greenhouse
gases. Some of the assaults are a part of the appropriations bill, with
some polluters’ friends evidently hoping that the public will not notice
such drastic measures if they are buried in the spending bill.

The Environmental Defense Fund summarized the most egregious examples:

    * No funding for enforcement of limits on mercury pollution from
cement kilns. Mercury pollution causes brain damage in young children.
    * An outright ban on any EPA regulation of methane, nitrous oxide,
sulfur hexafluoride, hydrofluorocarbons, carbon dioxide or
perfluorocarbons from stationary sources for whatever reason,
including their impact on public health and ozone.
    * A sweeping prohibition on all work by the EPA to address carbon
pollution, including a critical public right to know program that
was set to give communities their first practical tools for
      identifying the biggest polluters.

EDF's full article.

In addition to the fight in the House, members of the Senate have also
worked to undermine public health.Highlights again from the
Environmental Defense Fund
<http://blogs.edf.org/climate411/2011/02/18/u-s-house-makes-underhanded-attempt-to-gut-clean-air-protections/>:

    * The "Do Absolutely Nothing on Climate" offered by Senator John
Barrasso (R-WY). This bill would permanently block the EPA /and/
every other federal agency from using the Clean Air Act /and/ any
other environmental law to do anything about reducing America's
climate pollution. *It would also preempt state climate actions*.
    * The "Do Nothing on Climate for Two Years" bill offered by Senator
Jay Rockefeller (D-WV). *This would block the EPA from taking any
action* to address America's climate pollution for at least two years.
    * The "Climate Science Denial" bill circulated by Rep. Fred Upton
(R-MI) and Senator Jim Inhofe (R-OK). *This would gut the Clean
Air Act *to exclude climate pollution and repeal the EPA
scientific finding that climate emissions pose a threat to human
      health.

This past week the House voted on a compromise short-term spending bill
which postpones a potential government shutdown until it expires on
March 18. That gives those of us at New York Interfaith Power & Light
two more weeks to speak to our lawmakers. Watch your inbox for an action
alert this week.
