Press release #5
July 10, 2006
FIRST FOREIGN ACTIVISTS ARRESTED AHEAD OF THE G8 SUMMIT IN ST. PETERSBURG
According to the reporters of Russian-language Indymedia
(ru.indymedia.org/newswire/display/15070/index.php), on the night of Sunday
July 9 two German participants in the bike caravan against the G8 were
arrested. The caravan has arrived from Berlin on July 7. An activist from
Tyumen in Western Siberia who came to St. Petersburg to take part in the
Russian Social Forum between July 14 and 15 was arrested along with them.
On the evening of July 9, 2006, they went to buy an internet card and were
arrested during a routine passport check. They are still held, ostensibly to
"ascertain the personal details in connection with the G8 summit." The
German activists had their passports on them from the very beginning.
The arrested people are held at 36 Police Station (2 ulitsa Yesenina, St.
Petersburg, phone 007 812 553 3602, fax 007 812 293 5702) for over 12 hours.
There are no charges filed, and the German citizens are not provided with a
translator.
According to the latest reports from the police, the arrested are suspected
of "committing provocative actions in Russian territory."

Besides that, there are numerous facts of repressions against Russian
participants in the Social Forum as they now travel from their respective
regions to St. Petersburg.
We are talking about the so-called "Operatsiya Zaslon" ("Operation Barrier")
which is aimed at not letting the activists arrive in St. Petersburg.
A press conference was dedicated to the problem, called State Extremism:
Provocations, Beatings and Arrests of the participants of the Second Russian
Social Forum in St. Petersburg. It featured the members of the Russian
Social Forum's organising committee.
They have reported new facts regarding persecution of the participants of
the Second Russian Social Forum (RSF-2) which is held in St. Petersburg
between July 13 and 15 to coincide with the G8 summit.
