>From Utah Jobs With Justice and UpNet:
Urgent Action Needed for Co-Op Miners
The Kingston owned mining company is threatening to fire all striking workers on
December 9. They put out a letter to everyone claiming that social security
numbers are invalid and if they do not have new ones on Dec. 9 they will be
terminated. The immigration status has not changed since they were hired. This
is because a union election is set for December 16. They are asking that
letters, especially from prominent politicians, religious figures and
organizations be immediate faxed to Charles Reynolds, Mine manager at C. W.
Mining. The fax number is 435-687-5724. The letters should demand a retraction
of the letter and a stop to the threats of firings and harassment. Two miners,
Celso Panduro and Alyson Kennedy have been fired already. Also letters should
be faxed to the NLRB demanding that C.W,. Mining be sanctioned for breaking the
NLRB agreement signed in July 2004: (303) 844-6249. The UMWA has filed
additional charges and a request for a 10J injunction.

Amnesty International Salt Lake Group's first “Write-A-Thon”
Downtown City Library, Saturday, Dec 11, 1-4 pm
This event is being held to mark Human Rights Day.

We will be writing letters to urge action on the tragic crisis of Darfur and the
release of prisoners of conscience, for example Rebiya Kadeer of China and
Father Li of Vietnam. We will also take this opportunity to write holiday
postcards to prisoners of conscience around the world. Our experience has
proven, time after time, that letters can make a difference.

Please go to our website for more detail:
http://www.amnestyutah.org/writeathon/write-a-thon.html .

Another goal of our Write-A-Thon is to fund this event. Every letter costs 80
cents to send. Your contribution, however small, is valuable. Please consider
funding the cost associated with the letters and postcards you write! Click on
the following link to donate and join the Salt Lake City letter writing team.
