Events:

Wednesday, November 2
Community Forum on the Implications of Tax Cuts for Economic Growth and the
Safety Net
3:30-5:00 PM
Salt Lake City Main Library Auditorium
200 East 400 South

Background
As the federal budget process got underway last spring, the accepted wisdom
seemed to be that in order to restore the

nation's economic health, finance the war on terror, and pay for greater tax
cuts, spending had to be dramatically reduced.

Congress followed the President's lead by adopting a budget reconciliation
process that requires deep cuts in the safety net

programs. For example, Medicaid is facing a minimum $10 billion cut, food
stamps could see a $3 billion reduction, and CSBG

and CDBG could lose up to 50% of their funding.

There appears to be momentum to offset one-time $200 billion-plus
Katrina-related relief and recovery spending by making even

deeper cuts in mandatory and discretionary spending. At the same time, there
has been no move to reduce or eliminate the tax

cuts. In fact, efforts are being made to repeal the estate tax (at an estimated
cost of $1 trillion over the next decade)

and substantially reduce the assistance provided to low-income working
individuals and families through the EITC.

Also of consequence are several issues before the 2006 Utah state Legislature
including: education and transportation

spending, the equity of the personal income tax, the proposed removal of the tax
on corporate income, business inputs, and

food, to name a few.

Please join the Family Investment Coalition for what we hope will be the first
part of an ongoing conversation about tax

policy and its implications for Utahns.

Panel (moderated by KCPW’’s Lara Jones)
Policymakers, business leaders, and economists will gather to debate: 1) the
role/function of taxes in society; 2) the

relationship between tax cuts and economic growth; 3) how to balance tax cuts
and deficit spending, and 4) their vision of a

"wise" tax policy which would fairly and equitably distribute the burden, while
continuing to provide crucial services and

supports to individuals, families, and communities.

GEMINUS: the other in the mirror - A new dance project by Erin Kaser
Post Theater, University of Utah - Ft. Douglas Blvd - Salt Lake City

After graduating from the University of Utah in 2004,Erin Kaser has had the
opportunity to perform in New
York and Oregon, as well as locally with several different groups. She is
presenting her new
choreography in a brief performance that reflects a vision from the past through
an image of the future.

GEMINUS, a short dance project, brings together six local artists as they
consider the dualities of self-identity. Through

her choreography, Erin peers into the worlds we create for ourselves and finds
that
sometimes the things that we forget are the things that make us who we are. The
four dancers both examine
the former and future self while playing on life's humor and senselessness. Join
us, and take a moment to
pause and remember that random chance can still create the most simple
solutions.

Choreography by Erin Kaser
Performed by Erin Lehua Brown, Lorin Hansen,
Kiersten Lewis, and Jersey Reo Riemo
With music by Tristan Moore

Tickets are $5 at the door
