Oaxaca Film Screening and Update in Watsonville and Santa Cruz
"Compromiso Cumplido" (True to My Pledge) on August 16th and 17th
On Thursday, August 16th, there will be a screening of True to My Pledge, a new film by Mal de Ojo TV, starting at 7pm at the meeting of the Brown Berets in Watsonville. On Friday, August 17th, Latinoamerican musicians TONALI will perform at 6:30pm at the Resource Center for Nonviolence in Santa Cruz. The music will be followed by an update on the peoples struggles in Oaxaca from Miguel Zafra, a screening of True to My Pledge and a discussion about the formation of a new group, Santa Cruz - Oaxaca Solidarity.
There is a requested donation of $5-20, but no one will be turned away for lack of funds. People are also encouraged to support the community of Tequisistlan, Oaxaca start a small library by donating new and used books in spanish.
True to My Pledge ("Compromiso Cumplido") is the first of a two-part documentary about the human rights violations during the current conflict in Oaxaca. The film documents some of the horrors committed against the civil society of Oaxaca, and shows the strategy of state terrorism employed by the local governor. Numerous deaths have been reported, and yet there have been no criminal accusations or investigations for these murders.

Community Foundation Destroys 200-Year-Old Aptos Landmark
Community Foundation of Santa Cruz County Cuts Down Community Landmark
Despite the fact that there is overwhelming vacant commercial space in Santa Cruz County, the Community Foundation of Santa Cruz County (CFSCC) decided to build a new office building in Aptos. Instead of building around the gorgeous landscape that defines the downtown Aptos area, CFSCC contracted Lewis Tree Service to cut down one of the few remaining Monterey Cypress trees on August 11th.
