Hello IMCers,

The site was not determined to be irreparable on ibiblio hosting, but
fixing it would have involved back and forth communication with ibiblio
staff with no guaranteed results. It was reckoned to be more straight
forward to attempt to revive the site on another server this having
added bonus that we had wished to to do this anyway to test some fixs to
other problems, and it seems the spam captcher has been fixed. I am not
sure if this is because present hosting has some tool installed that is
required that ibiblio does not such as GD2 but I suspect it is more due
to fact that on site was restore with injecting backup database dump
(after altering to fit new server) into a database of a fresh install of
latest version of DadaIMC (and then autoupdate run).

Because the database layout for the DadaIMC Content Management System
we use includes several server specific references the db dump it
required modification before reinjection into a new setting, ie change
ref to ibiblio mysql host to localhost, Also it contains url of site,
rather than change this for test, as site was down under
scotland.indymedia.org just got it repointed to the new hosting for it
to start working. I will suggest to DadaIMC CMS developers that they set
up back dump that creates injection file without these so can be
injected into a fresh install on new server set up. Or not have such
info in database just in config files, or use config files to update
database if diff rather than other way round, but that may have some
performance issues.

The present hosting is temp it may last 1 day or it may last a year.
That is uncertain. There is no money cost for it at present. The
performance seems allot better, I think due to faster database access as
less load on present one than ibiblio. One other aspect of restoring
site is many deleted upload have been restored from daily backup, I have
manually removed many of music audio track fileshare spam, If you spot
any files that need removing that can't be removed via editor web
interface (as already removed from db) then let me know full urls.

Do test and use as normal the new site, including comment function. And
be aware as only been a few days so we may have to restore from backup
again if something goes wrong that damages present db entries, but on
brief look over site seem functional.

We also now have access to stats, but as we Indymedia sites in general
are not logging IPs to access logs on harddisk. Note IP address of
request presented will be processed else server does not know where to
send file back to. If you value privacy then please use TOR (
http://tor.eff.org ) which I find best used with
http://foxyproxy.mozdev.org/ on Firefox web browser (under GNU/Linux or
course).

We could try rehost back on ibiblio, with hope that changes we have made
to db have fixed problems rather than it being something lacking on
ibiblio server setup. Ibiblio filespace is still being used for daily
backup.

As Ulla said we could rent out own new hosting. She says about 200
pounds, this was based on being able to use host like site5 which would
be 60 pounds a year it seems from present offer.

http://www.site5.com/affiliates/idevaffiliate.php?id=1306

But I did briefly try to set up on my site5 hosting but due to
permission problems on setup; ones I required to allow installer to work
were barred from working for security reasons it seemed. I think may
have been able to install with further effort or interaction with site5
staff. Or may have to look to other hosting.

There are allsorts of options to shop around for, we could go for
sharing some hosting with other imcs that use php. If we want closer
control over whole server this may be best way to go, but for economy
and ease going with economy of scale of shared hosting such as site5 is
way to go.

I myself am dropping my UML virtual server ( movingpages.org ) which
give me full control but costs 270 pounds a a year to move all my sites
to site5 hosting as much for ease of maintaining sites as cost savings.
No need to worry about upgrading kernel just CMSes themselves. Having
fun of root access on server if good but my time and money best used
elsewhere nowadays.

The few extra things I can do with full root access of UML, I will work
out how to live without. (separate user access for sub domains, with
site5 one user per domain)

If anyone has set next meeting then please add to calendar as with any
other event:

As I understand Carpet tiles have now arrived at Infoseed but yet to be laid. If you wish to involved yourself with helping Infoseed that will act also as Edinburgh IMC then do join Infoseed mailing list.

http://mail.lists.infoseed.org/mailman/listinfo/infoseed-discuss_lists.infoseed.org

More help is need to move space forward, and get workshops going. A
'Using the indymedia website' one is planned for Sunday Oct 1st 2pm. It
would be good if someone (maybe me) could set up scanner under GNU/Linux
(mostly Ubuntu) set we have at Infoseed before then. And also I will
have to test digital camera upload via usb on those pc before then.

If any one wish to do a history of Indymedia display for walls of
infoseed then that may be a good idea.

A combined Indymedia / Infoseed flyer may be a good idea.

cheers,
