*TIME*: Saturday 31^st January 11am-3pm

Friends of the Earth Glasgow will today compare Scotland’s environmental
impact with other countries, including China, using a ‘Great Wall of
Carbon’. The stunt, in central Glasgow, will reveal that each person in
Scotland has a jumbo carbon footprint compared to individuals in a host
of other countries.

The group aim to show that as Scotland is responsible for such large
emissions, we should be the first to act. The wall will be constructed
out of stacks of black cubes representing CO2 tonnes - the countries
with the largest carbon footprint having the biggest stacks.

The public and local MSPs (amongst which Patrick Harvey and Robert
Brown) will be invited to sign and comment on a climate graffiti wall,
which will be presented to MSPs in a mass lobby later in the year. The
campaign is calling on the Scottish Government to ensure cuts in climate
emissions are made as soon as possible, especially since countries with
the smallest carbon footprints are often the places that will bear the
worst effects of climate change.

Cindy Courtillier, a group member of Friends of the Earth Glasgow, said:

“Climate change is already dramatically affecting people, especially in
poorer countries. Scotland has the chance this year to show leadership
and responsibility by passing a strong Climate Bill. We are asking
people in Glasgow to play their part by encouraging their MSPs to insist
on a bill with firm commitments to early reductions in climate changing
emissions.”

“If we don’t make urgent cuts in emissions now, we may still be able to
meet the Government’s target cut of 80% by 2050, but our climate may
become dangerously unstable. That is why we are asking for a strong bill
which includes incentives for these early cuts.”
