I just received an in-person visit from two local FBI agents who just
"stopped by" to request in person that the IMC remove the identifying
information from the photographs on the Nantes website. I explained to
them that, while I am the registered agent for the Seattle Indymedia
Center, I have no authority to make such a request, but I agreed to
pass on the fact that they visited.
I asked them what the federal government's interest was in getting this
information removed, and they stated that it was merely a courtesy to
the Swiss government, who had requested that the identifying
information be removed. They were careful to state that no laws had
been violated and that there was no crime at issue, it was just a
courtesy request. They also clarified that this was not a request to
remove the photographs, just the identifying information.
As per usual, they did not have a URL or any specific site that I could
go to, and they even misspelled the website -- "natz.indymedia.org"
I advised them that the Seattle Indymedia Center was not associated
with the Nantes Indymedia Center and that they should perhaps take
their requests to that website (which they have actually already done
vis a vis Nantes' ISP). See http://nantes.indymedia.org (in french,
but you can get the general idea).
In solidarity,
Devin
