"This is not a clash between civilisations. It is a clash about civilisation. It is the age-old battle between progress and reaction, between those who embrace and see opportunity in the modern world, and those who reject its existence. "

-- Tony Blair Is the "War on Terror" a clash between Islam and West?
Should the West fear, or welcome, an Islamic revival?
As the world slides into a dangerous new age of global economic turmoil, environmental crisis, and political uncertainty, governments continue to point at terrorism as the defining problem of our times. Consequently, Islam is increasingly viewed with suspicion and anxiety.
Digging beneath the surface of media hysteria and government hostility, Nafeez will explore the depths of Islamic thought and history, to discover whether Islam can be mobilized as a force for social justice to tackle these global crises. He will discuss how Islam shapes ecological, economic and political values to frame a new paradigm of civilizational renewal for the 21st century.
Nafeez Ahmed is executive director of the Institute for Policy Research & Development (www.glo b alcrisis.org.uk). He teaches courses in international relations, empire and globalisation at Sussex and Brunel Universities. His research on terrorism was used by the 9/11 commission, and led him to testify in US congress.
His books include The London Bombings: An Independent Inquiry (Duckworth, 2006); The War on Truth: 9/11, Disinformation & the Anatomy of Terrorism (Olive Branch, 2005); and Behind the War on Terror: Western Secret Strategy & the Struggle for Iraq (Clairview, 2003)
