as you can probably appreciate craig, this is a difficult email to write
and i would welcome views from others associated with sheffield indymedia.
the obvious first thing to say is well done for leaving the "vile bnp"
behind. it is likely becoming apparent to you the regard they and their
ilk are held in. i applaud your bravery in not only leaving but being
public about it. i also note the discussions on the sheffield forum on
this topic:
http://www.sheffieldforum.co.uk/showthread.php?t=373271
it is however very difficult for ex-fascists to gain the trust of
anti-fascists, but not impossible. if we believe that people can't
change their ideas and behaviour through experience and struggle, we're
all wasting our time doing anything in the economic or political spheres.
i am also very reluctant to try to change history [erm... it's
happened]. you *were* a bnp supporter, you *did* go out [on the street
and on the internet] spreading the "word". i would be opposed therefore
to removing your picture or name, but i do have and alternate proposal.
write something for sheffield indymedia about being an ex-fascist and
post it on the newswire: what you thought and did then, what you think
and do now, what you advise someone who would think of joining them [or
their mates] etc, etc.
just saying "i'm not a fascist anymore" does *not* seem to be enough to
be. from my point of view, you need to do more than that: to actively
make ammends and help prevent the rise of fascism.
it would also be useful for us, if you're serious about cleaning up your
mess, to post comments on the offending articles. email this list when
you're done [with urls] and we can then promote those comments to give
them greater prominence.
i would be interested in your and other imcers' opinions on this.
