Not exactly about forests, but very, very important nonetheless...
jim.
PLEASE FORWARD THIS WIDELY--THANK YOU!
Hello friends,
As many of you have heard, AmerenUE has announced that they will be filing
an application for a license to build and operate a new 1,600 megawatt nuclear
power plant. The proposed location is the site of the existing Callaway
Nuclear Plant about 90 miles upwind and up-river from St. Louis. While Ameren
says they have yet to make a final decision on whether or not to build the
plant, they have already ordered reactor components from a vendor in Japan.
Missourians for Safe Energy is very concerned and we recognize that now is
the time to act if we hope to stop this ill conceived venture. That's why we
are writing to all in eastern Missouri who've expressed interest at any of the
events we've been at over the the past year to invite you to attend a short
presentation and discussion of what can be done to stop a new nuke and
promote a safe, sustainable energy future based upon energy efficiency and
renewables.
WHEN? 7 p.m., Wednesday, August 15
WHERE? St. Louis County Public Library, Mid-County Branch, 7821 Maryland
Ave., Clayton.
WHAT? A short talk on the topic "Nuclear Power: Ripe for Revival?" by Mark
Haim of Missourians for Safe Energy. Mark is based in Columbia, Mo. where he
has been involved in public interest advocacy for more than three decades.
Mark's talk will be followed by Q&A as well as discussion as to what can be
done to keep Ameren from building a new nuke (or a new coal plant) and instead
getting them to pursue efficiency and renewables.
WHO? You, we hope. All who are concerned and would like to learn more are
welcome. We are particularly interested in bringing together people from
throughout the StL metro who are interested in organizing to say "NO" to both
nuclear power and coal, and "YES" to a sustainable energy future.
WHY? Because decisions like this are too important--to us, to our kids, to
our grandkids, and to all future generations- Because decisions like this
are too important--to us, to our kids, to our grandkids, and to all future
generations-<WBR>-t
We hope you will make a point of joining us on August 15 and that you will
pass this invitation on to others you think might be interested. If you would
like to help get the word out on this event, please send us an e-mail back
and we can forward a PFD file with an attractive 8.5 x 11 flyer you can print
out and post.
We also strongly encourage you to forward this e-mail to others in the StL
metro who might be interested.
If you have any questions or need more information, please reply to this
post or call us at 573-875-0539 and ask for Mark Haim.
Yours for a Safe, Sustainable Energy Future,
Missourians for Safe Energy
P.S. We are attaching a post that was sent out earlier this week with a news
item from Tuesday's New York Times and a brief commentary. If you are at all
concerned about the nuclear industry raiding the public treasury to finance
a revival of an industry that has failed the test of the marketplace, you
won't want to miss this one.
