The Coaliton Against Police Crimes and Repression got another boost last
week in its campaign for Local Control of the St. Louis Police Department.
The Black Caucus of the Board of Aldermen had submitted a resolution
supporting Local Control and our efforts to change state statutes in order
to get that control. On June 14, the Public Safety Committee passed that
resolution on a 10-0 vote. It also picked up three new
cosponsors--Alderpersons Young, Hanrahan and Gregali. On June 15 the
resolution passed the full Board of Aldermen with a 22-1 vote. The only
negative vote came from Alderwoman Kirner.

This puts the Board's support on record, in an overwhelming vote, so that we
can take a united front to the state legislators when they meet next year.
The Black Caucus has also offered to help us with our lobbying efforts in
Jeff City, to make sure that the citizens' voices are heard.

Special thanks to Alderman Terry Kennedy for spearheading this effort.

P.S. Don't forget--Jamala Rogers and Alderman Kennedy are on Sunday Morning
Live, 104.9, on June 24. They will be discussing this issue of Local
Control.
